Let's Predict the 2017 Fantasy Season Award Winners

Postby jaykay22 » Fri Jun 23, 2017 9:35 pm

I think this could be a fun topic both now to see everyone's predictions, but most importantly to look back at come December, when the season is over.

I know there's already the bold predictions thread, but instead of just predicting how many yards and TD's particular players may get, let's do strictly awards here. Make the takes as scorching hot or as chilly as you wish.

2017 MVP Winner: David Johnson. While I could see both Julio and Zeke here come December, I think DJ is in for another monster season. The targets and receptions might regress a tiny bit, but otherwise I can easily see him put together a #1 overall scorer season again seeing as how nothing has substantially changed or improved for the Cards on offense.

2017 Biggest Bust Winner: Alshon Jeffery. I like Alshon the player, and maybe it's the scorned Bears fan in me, but I have no faith in him ever turning in a 1400 yard season again, regardless of scenery, QB situation, or contract year motivations.

2017 Breakout Star and New Top24 Startup Fixture Winner: Stefon Diggs. I'm biased as I love Diggs and just acquired him +1.07 for my Cobb+1.03 for team 1 (sig way overdue for an update, btw). But if healthy for 16 games, and with a full offseason to gel with Bradford some more, I can honestly see Diggs post a top 15 WR season in PPR. He's so crafty and a tremendous ball hog. Crowder is a close second for me here.

2017 Comeback Player of the Year Winner: Keenan Allen. Pretty self-explanatory. If healthy for 16 he's capable of being a great asset, it's all a matter of whether you trust him for a full 16 in 2017? I personally do.

2017 "Should Have Sold When I Still Had the Chance" Winner: Randall Cobb. I think the "Cobb is a high end fantasy asset experiment" is officially coming to an end, and 2017 will be the final nail to its coffin. I was one of the people who was convinced he was worth a 2nd round startup pick in 2015 after his huge 2014 breakout year, and needless to say I was burned. But this isn't just bitterness on my part. Cobb is going to put up something like WR25-30 PPR numbers, imo, and he will get cut after this season because his cap hit is enormous.

Feel free to comment with your predictions, and also feel free to add other awards you want.

*HOT TAKE TEMPERATURE LEVEL: 6.5/10*

2017 MVP: I'll say Ajayi. Not that he will necessarily have more pts than Bell or DJ, but with ADP factored in I can see Ajayi being the most VALUABLE asset this season. Top 5 overall back in 2017.

2017 Biggest Bust: Again factoring ADP, I'll say Zeke. I won't be shocked if he comes down to earth in the way of 280-950-8.

2017 Breakout Star: Kevin White. Hate on me, but he will definitely have the opportunity. I'll call a line now of 65-925-7.

2017 Comeback Player of the Year: Alshon. Top 15 WR this year. 85-1150-11.

2017 "Should Have Sold When I Still Had the Chance" Winner: Jordan Howard. Not that he gets benched or anything, but I could see us looking back on him in 1-2 years not dissimilarly to how we currently look at Jeremy Hill.

2017 MVP Winner: Jordan Howard. While everyone else wants to jump off, I don't think there are too many RBs more secure in their roles. Howard has zero competition on a team that will run the football a lot and has a rookie QB who will be dumping off passes. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he leads the league in combined yardage and doubles his reception numbers.

2017 Biggest Bust Winner: Davante Adams. There are a few good candidates but ultimately I landed on a "boom/bust" player in Adams. I am expecting enough of a resurgence from Cobb ( a reasonable bet as a comeback player ) and improved play and use from Allison that I don't see the opportunities being there for Adams like they were last year. The biggest red flag is the yardage. His numbers benefited from 12 TDs but he had 50 or fewer yards in TEN (that's 10!) games last season. Compare that to WRs with similar fantasy totals - Fitzgerald had 4, Michael Thomas had only 3. Even that "boom/bust" Desean Jackson only had 6 games under 50 yards...

2017 Breakout Star and New Top24 Startup Fixture Winner: Carson Wentz*. This comes with an asterisk in that "top 24" isn't exactly common for QBs but he is my projected "breakout star". He's got a lot of weapons around him and the talent to succeed. He was the #25 QB last season and will push his way all the way into the top 10.

2017 Comeback Player of the Year Winner: Eddie Lacy. Things went off the rails after his first two years where he looked like a lock as a top 5 RB for a long time. Now with a team that loves to run the football, I'm expecting "Lynch like" results with 1500(ish) combined yards.

2017 "Should Have Sold When I Still Had the Chance" Winner: Rob Gronkowski. He still seems to be carrying elite value in a lot of leagues. Not only do I think he will never shake his injuries - playing hurt most of the time - but after 2017 I expect a major value hit and hints at retirement. I don't think he plays past 30.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

2017 MVP Winner: Melvin Gordon. LA will have an explosive offense this year and MGIII will be the main benefactor.

2017 Biggest Bust Winner: David Johnson. I see AZ crashing all the way down this year, including their bellcow.

2017 Breakout Star and New Top24 Startup Fixture Winner: Dalvin Cook. I'll continue my bullish views on Cook in every forum.

2017 Comeback Player of the Year Winner: Sammy Watkins. Finally stays healthy and becomes a top five WR.

2017 "Should Have Sold When I Still Had the Chance" Winner: Julio Jones. I think the foot injuries keep on coming and with a new OC in town he's going to see a regression, more so because Ryan.

2017 MVP Winner: AJ Green. I think he'll be the top fantasy WR and win a lot of leagues. The offense should be a lot more dynamic, their weapons should be healthier, and their defense is not that good. They'll be in a lot of shootouts, and Dalton will benefit from this as well.

2017 Biggest Bust Winner: Mike Evans. With all the new vet weapons in town, and a better defense, I don't think he'll see nearly as many target as he did last season. The difference between the additions in TB from AJs situation is I think they'll siphon targets immediately from Evans. This is a more a 2017 bust, and I think his value will and should stay high. I just think owners will be very letdown by a WR15-20 season from their stud.

2017 Breakout Star and New Top24 Startup Fixture Winner: Jamison Crowder. With all the new WRs in Washington it's pretty unknown how they'll all be used especially if Docston returns and has a role. I look for Crowder to separate himself form the bunch as he builds on his foundation with Cousins. After Kirk signs a new longterm deal next offseason, drafters won't be able to ignore Crowder's 90/1200/9 season and he'll be locked into the top two rounds of startups.

2017 Comeback Player of the Year Winner: Doug Martin. Top 20 fantasy RB even with the missed games. Lock it in!

2017 "Should Have Sold When I Still Had the Chance" Winner: David Johnson. Very strong chance he's not seen as a top 5 dynasty startup pick, and the fall from top 5 pick to even an early 2nd round pick is a massive drop in value. He'll be good for a while, but he'll never have the value he does this offseason after a mediocre year in 2017, and the Cards going into rebuild mode after this season.

2017 MVP - L Bell. Regardless of scoring rules will be the No 1 non QB in fantasy this year.

2017 Biggest Bust - All rookie RBs, except some random not regularly drafted in rookie drafts. None of the usual suspects leads their team in RB Fantasy points in 2017.

2017 Breakout Star - Should be Terelle Pryor, but age will scupper his top 24 ADP. So it will be Mike Williams, who'll have a stellar final quarter of the season and be overdrafted based on misguided extrapolation.

2017 Comeback player - John Brown. Only lazy journalists will continue to refer to his sickle cell as he delivers DJax style numbers.

2017 Should've sold when I had the chance - Tyreek Hill. Will still kick bleep on Special Teams, but will be bullied/schemed out of consistent production on offence.
99 problems but your 10 team league ain't one!

2017 MVP: OBJ...already a stud, word is he has his head on straight(ish), wants a new contract and has other talented receivers to take away some of the pressure from him. The team still has a terrible O-line and running backs. Finishes the year 110/1600/15

2017 Biggest Bust: DJ....Arians runs his Running Backs into the ground, Palmer is falling off the cliff fast so teams will be prepared for DJ. I believe an injury will happen by week 8.

2017 Breakout Star: Diggs....Stays healthy, had an offseason to work with Bradford. Finishes with 105/1250/8

2017 Comeback Player of the Year: Alshon. Top 15 WR this year. 85-1100-12.

2017 "Should Have Sold When I Still Had the Chance" Winner: Antonio Brown...He will be 29 during the season, so going into 2018 people will be talking about how he is going to be 30, he is small, his body wont hold up, Big Ben is going to retire. This may be the last year to get TOP dollar for him.

I agree that there's a good chance that he will gain less than last season, I hated losing Ron Leary, he was very under-rated, well, so was Doug Free. I feel like La'El Collins will fill in admirably at one of those spots, right now, it looks like it will be for Free at RT. I'm thinking around 1,300 or so yards this season is about right assuming he plays a full slate of games.

MVP: Amari Cooper - his late season woes end this year and he balls out week 14-16(along with the rest of the year) winning a lot of fantasy leagues while securing the no. 1 seed for the Raiders in the playoffs.

Biggest Bust: Michael Thomas - Assumes the no.1 role in NO and is overmatched all year, leading to pedestrian numbers. Snead outscores him.

Breakout Star: Donte Moncrief - So much hate on these boards for the guy. He finally stays healthy and uses his big frame and athleticism to have a Devante Adams-esque breakout with 1,000+ yards and 10+ TDs

Comeback Player: Beast Mode - He dials in his Skittles regiment and has a top 10 RB season. That o-line and the weapons around him open up massive lanes for him to do his thing.

'Should have sold when I had the chance': Jordan Reed - almost too easy here but his brain is dangerously close to scrambled egg status. Find a contender in need of a TE and get what you can while you can.

2017 MVP Winner: Most studs will be studs, but Jamison Crowder will produce well above his current ADP, especially in ppr. A ton of targets walked out the door this offseason and roles are up in the air. If Pryor fills DeSean's downfield role, relying on basically a rookie in Docston to fill the route-running-based short field role seems fraught with risk. Crowder is familiar with the system and QB, and has already established his route running bona fides.

2017 Biggest Bust Winner: Dez Bryant- He's never been a big yardage guy, but he's now shown a propensity for injury. I'd rather not sink dynasty value into a WR I'd be praying for a TD or three.

2017 Breakout Star and New Top24 Startup Fixture Winner: Cam Meredith. With Demaryius Thomas, Keenan Allen and Davante Adams falling out, Meredith 's combo of 2017 production and relative age will propel him up the rankings.

2017 Comeback Player of the Year Winner: "Comeback" here is used in the loose way DeMarco Murray came back from the dead after a terrible 2015. This year, with the additions or Peterson and Kamara, people are leaving Mark Ingram for dead. But, his talent isn't a question and this offense has shown it can support three RBs in yesteryear's Deuce McCallister-Pierre Thomas-Reggie Bush trio, all of whom were useful in fantasy. Finally, Ingram's contract could conceivably mean he's playing for a new deal/team next year, which would suggest his issues with his role won't be as pronounced as they were in 2016.

2017 "Should Have Sold When I Still Had the Chance" Winner: Amari Cooper- Still hasn't performed to his draft status. He needs to have a big year not just to maintain his dynasty value, but for his upcoming NFL contract. With Carr paid and Mack and Gabe Jackson up next, he needs to prove he's worth the Raiders re-signing... or prove to the NFL he's worth a heavy contract of any sort.
