Can someone please talk me down?

Postby vtguy88 » Fri Mar 13, 2015 11:17 am

This trade just happened in my league:

Owner A (also the league's commissioner) receives: DeAndre Hopkins
Owner B receives: Rookie/FA pick 2.03

Obviously this is nuts...but it gets better.
There is a "pending" period in this league for people to offer better trades...etc...
I offer the owner my first instead for Hopkins...a strictly better pick...get told no.

Am I overreacting by seriously considering leaving this league? Or does this kind of bleep happen with you all too?

For whatever it's worth, I won this league last year.

Obviously something shady going down.

How can he possibly turn down a better pick without being accused of collusion?

If you offered a first round this year, then this is pretty obv collusion and I would leave if the commissioner is partaking in collusion.

If it's a first next year, then maybe the owner values 2.03 more than what could very well be the 1.12 next year

I'd raise a pretty big stink about that. Start by posting on the league message board that you're confused why the Hopkins owner turned down your offer of the 1.12 for Hopkins. See how the league reacts before you escalate.

Since you won last year, I might have turned you down myself. I avoid helping the reigning champs when possible, unless it's a massive benefit to me. You say it's a rookie/FA pick, what kind of league is it? Keeper?

That's shady and I probably wouldn't hang around a league like that.

I would throw an absolute fit. It might be different if there were more players/picks in the deal it could be argued on their personal ranks and values. But a strict single pick for a player versus you offer a higher and more valuable pick for same said player and get told no? Clearly something is going on beyond the rulebook there

I also tend not to help the best team in my league but I would make an exception if I had to choose between that 2nd rd pick and his 1.12. Although I wouldnt do it at all, haha..

The trade happening is one thing. I could tack it up to a stupid owner (most leagues have at least 1) or just someone who maybe isn't high on Hopkins. bleep happens sometimes. What I wouldn't put up with is where you offered a better pick and got told no. I would demand an explanation why your offer was refused. Actually I don't even know if I would bother, I would probably just quit the league altogether. That's clearly collusion, there's simply no explanation for that at all.

It's a quasi-dynasty/keeper league. Keep 12 players, but for all intents and purposes it is a dynasty league for considering this situation.

His reasoning is "I don't back out of trades I've already agreed to". Basically, he doesn't want to be seen as "unreliable", or pulling back from something he's already "committed" to, or something like that. Not collusion, just ridiculousness.

For reference, I KNOW for a fact the commissioner offered the 2nd pick for these players also: Mike Evans, Kelvin Benjamin, Sammy Watkins, TY Hilton

Commissioner is also a good friend of mine, though he's been a little off the rails lately. I'm pretty sure there is no collusion here, just a ridiculously stupid owner

I understand about 1% of the "don't want to back out of a commitment". If the league is designed to be able to have other owners "poach" trades then that's the way the league is constructed and that is the very framework of the league!

OK, that's at least a coherent position. The problem is you guys have a rule in place that's specifically designed to encourage owners to back out of trades. Sounds like you guys should either scrap the "pending" period or at least get a head count of people who refuse to use it.

ETA: In other words, I agree with HawkeyeState.

Unless the league bylaws say you HAVE to take better offers, there's nothing wrong here. It's 4 spots people. Maybe it's 20% he doesn't like to back out of accepted trades, and 40% he doesn't want to help the champ, and 40% dumb.

It doesn't make it collusion.

It's something the commissioner decided to put in the rules, unilaterally, but several owners do not agree with it. This guy happens to not only disagree with it, but refuses to utilize the rule. The rule was originally designed as a "commenting period" on trades, to give less experienced people the opportunity to hear from others before finalizing a trade.

Basically...it's a clusterf&^#^&&

That being said, I have a good team...but it's giving me serious pause at this point. Reason enough to leave? Idk...hence this thread

Like I said, seriously doubt it's collusion. Is supreme stupidity and dumb-assery enough to leave a league?
