Re: Randall Cobb
I think there is a middle ground here. I think a borderline playoff team could make a play for him and be able to sell him on still being able to compete but also make more money than he would in GB.

going from green bay to oakland didn't exactly help james jones # ... although as much as carr checked down and threw short cobb may be better suited to that style , BUT rarely is going to oakland the last decade been a good move for one's career .Csl312 wrote:Disagree with this view actually contrarion. Who is to say going to Oakland doesn't allow him to be the focal point of an offense, allowing him to thrive, and make 30% more on his next deal? What are the odds he gets hurt with the Packers, and never has the opportunity to sign another big deal, leaving a few million on the table because he was counting on that next deal? The what if game works both ways, the NFL certainly is the not for long league, I would take the biggest guaranteed deal offered because that is really all anyone can count on happening.clarion contrarion wrote:disagree .... he can perhaps sign for a few million more go to a bad situation put up 65% of his current numbers and then lose 20 million dollars on his next deal , he is only 25 and assuming he plays to finish this deal and still be able to sign another reasonably big deal but if he goes to oakland and flames out then maybe he cannot get more than the vet minimum or a low dollar deal.dynastyninja wrote:There's no clear "smart" decision. Not being a father I am maybe not completely qualified to answer that question, but I would guess that my kids would forgive me when the extra couple million means that they and their children don't actually have to worry about money ever, because I made that much more to invest and grow for my and their future.
I assume most of us around here are not making millions every year. And most athletes are. Still though I am surprised by how casually people refer to a few million. Think of this as well - taxes and agent fees eat up that money pretty fast, meaning getting a bigger deal is maybe more attractive than it at first sounds.

Re: Randall Cobb
Sounds like the Packers just saved 3.5 million by cutting Hawk. Leans a little more towards them keeping their free agents on the offensive side of the ball? I read a while ago that they were going to try to go strong on defense this year at the draft, and this move looks like they are setting the stage for that to happen.

Re: Randall Cobb
This is a serious question as I don't know that much about nfl contract rules. If the Packers are planning to sign him, why haven't they already? Wouldn't it make more sense to lock him up before other teams can try to woo him? Or was than not an option?
Re: Randall Cobb
The Packers can still sign him. He is still technically a Packer because Free Agency hasn't started yet.
If they aren't tagging anyone, they should use the tag on him that way other teams cannot contact him. They can still negotiate a deal despite getting tagged later down the road.

The projected franchise tag price for a wide receiver is $12.8 million. To put it in perspctive, Jordy Nelson has an annualized salary of $9.7 million. They want to re-sign Cobb and still might but I will be surprised if they use the franchise tag on him. Thats a whole lot of cheese for a WR2.
Re: Randall Cobb
As they say, deadlines spur action. They might be clearing some cap space and can continue to negotiate with Cobbs agent. Cobb won't hit free agency until March 11th so still plenty of time to sign him before other teams get a crack at him. However, most players when they are this close to free agency like to take a look and see just how greener the grass may be on the other side.DynastyBuilder515 wrote:This is a serious question as I don't know that much about nfl contract rules. Re: Randall Cobb
Glanced at the Pack on overthecap. First time I've really played on that site, neat, but still feel like I don't totally understand it nor how the cap works exactly.
I think both Cobb and the Pack would like to stay together. I think the only way Cobb leaves is if he gets a ton of guaranteed money elsewhere emphasis on guaranteed, but it seems the current trend is a more pay as you go model so it will take someone who really believes he is worth a lot. I see that as not so probable.
I think Nelson's contract is interesting. http://overthecap.com/player/jordy-nelson/1121. His cap number and salary starts to balloon starting in 2016, doubling and going up from there. I would think they look to renegotiate that.
They also have a good bit of space comparatively to other teams but not looking at it too in depth I would hazard a guess that it gets trickier in a few years. Looking at the team break downs by year, they are near the bottom from 2016 on. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing as it also means they have a lot of guys locked up. Nelson's contract works out to an average of 9.7 mil a year. They supposedly have 32.7 in space this year. Let's say they reup Cobb for 9 mil a year for 5 years and say they are willing to give him 10 mil guaranteed and they are more willing to balance or even front load it to counter Jordy's. AFter the bonus that would leave 35 a year to balance out over 5 years. That's not so bad especially considering they've shown a propensity to build through the draft meaning they will have locked in lower salaries. But then again I'm not familiar enough with who all they need to resign.
Sure he could get more money elsewhere but I think the Pack make a solid effort to keep him and if I were them I'd be ok with either front loading or giving him a big bonus as at his age, 5 years from now he's unlikely to be a cut candidate. After looking at Jordy's base salaries I think its more likely that they lock up Cobb to give them the option of getting out of those huge base salaries later in Jordy's deal either by renegotiating or releasing him. But I could just be talking out my butt.

Re: Randall Cobb
Packers to let Cobb test the market:
The Green Bay Packers have plenty of cap space after releasing A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones. That doesn't mean GM Ted Thompson is about to deviate from his frugal, long-term approach to team building, however. According to Jason La Canfora, the Packers believe Randall Cobb's market is "likely to get out of hand" and have focused their efforts on retaining other key free agents.
Reports surfaced last week that Cobb and his camp desire a deal worth an average of $9 million per year. While less annually than what Jordy Nelson received last offseason, that price tag significantly exceeds the going rate for a receiver like Cobb who spends the vast majority of his time in the slot. La Canfora's account suggests that either Cobb's actual demands surpass $9 million annually or that the Packers are vary about giving a slot receiver that much money.
