Revis extension is the simplest explanation.

Good point. I had forgotten his contract situation. I still have trouble imagining them not wanting to move Mallet in order to just carry Brady and Garoppolo, though.

Wright likely won't do anything this season - he's already too far behind. I wouldn't expect him to really matter too much at all, to be honest - Wright isn't really good.

This was a clear cash-dump by the Pats.

The move really only impacts Doug Martin who everybody is probably regretting not buying low on now.

Agreed. How do we know that they weren't just really high on Tim Wright, or really low on Mankins? Maybe the deal to see here is just the actual deal that was done and not much else. Teams do usually spend up to the cap though.... it's an intriguing situation to say the least.
Given that Wright was 3rd on the depth chart, an offseason dissappoint AND he was acquired mostly because of Schiano........the Pats could have gave away something far less valuable to get Wright. With this in mind, I definitely think something else is in the works. Be that a trade or Revis extension. I think it was far more about unloading dollars than it was acquiring Tim Wright.

Mankins was highly-paid, getting old and had a big cap hit coming. I agree with DLFiend that this is largely a salary dump. Maybe it means Gronk isn't going to be ready, and they didn't want to go into another year with Hooman as their only available TE. I'm not certain that's what it is, but it's a possibility. But it think this is largely about money, and that's the angle that Boston-area talk radio is going with today.

I think it's all of the above. Mankins makes a lot of money for a guy who's play is starting to slip. They have guys ready to take his spot. Meanwhile, Wright is a really good fit as a move TE, and perhaps could be Hernandez lite. The Pats got a 4th-round pick to boot.

I'd also like to add that I can't imagine the Pats getting much of anything for Mallett. What has he shown during his career to warrant being traded for anything of value?

Or have we all missed the true point to this trade?

The Hoodie is going to move Mallett to left guard?!?

I like the move for both Doug Martin (Whom I recently bought) and Tim Wright.

It may take Wright a while to learn the offense but he put up decent numbers last year and taking over Aaron Hernandez' spot with Brady as his QB can't hurt.

Remember when everybody thought LaFell was going to take over Hernandez's spot? LaFell and Wright are actually pretty similar - I'd be surprised to see Wright used in anything resembling the A-Hern role at all. And certainly not this year.

By the way, I was just offered Coby Fleener for him, but I declined. I'm trying to get Dwayne Allen instead. Are either of these deals good?
