That situation is too nasty for me. I'll let someone else burn too high of a pick.

As an owner of Tate on a couple of squads, I'm not even looking to invest any more value in this backfield at this point. I'll just wait until the season starts to see how things shake out. I still think Tate is the day 1 starter, but his injury history is well known. Tate's a player I'll be looking to move in the first month of the season.

Just curious what round you Crowell lovers would take him now. Do you think I can get him in the 4th or 5th?

In my league I can probably pick him up off waivers week 1 but in leagues where people know about this website he will still get taken in the second or third I would think. He and SeaStrunk could be steals.

I'm not hating this as a landing spot. I would've preferred Cincy (at least until they spent a second-round pick on Jeremy Hill) or Atlanta (which, as someone noted elsewhere, may have been unlikely given the circumstances under which he left Georgia). I think any of us attracted to Crowell agree he's capable of beating out Terrance West for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Ben Tate. Given that it's Ben Tate, Crowell thus could actually be lineup-worthy at some point during the 2014 season.

Nice landing spot for a great talent.... but I'm quite leery of 6th and 7th rounders as well as UFAs. The hit rate is dramatically low in terms of guys you would actually put in your lineup on Sunday morning. Arian Foster is a massive exception to the rule, and Colston. Crowell is a nice stash late but don't overpay for him or use a premium pick on him. 4th or 5th round of a rookie draft seems like ok territory to go for him.

The Colston and Foster comparisons aren't really appropriate with Crowell. Crowell was an UDFA primarily because of his OTF issues, not his talent. If Crowell had his head on straight he may have been drafted in the NFL 3rd round or so. No rookie draft will see him drop to the 4th round.

You're basing everything off of Crowell as a freshman. A lot of time has passed, it's not lock that he continued to develop after he was booted from Georgia. Had he stayed at UG, it's not lock that he would have been as good as Ben Tate at Auburn.

Dude is in Cleveland. It's one thing to expect a guy to smarten up in a team with solid leadership. It's another to expect him to do it when surrounded by guys lacking maturity themselves. I was looking to pick up Crowell pre-draft, but my expectations of success are down pretty heavily now.

The "Myth of Crowell" (as I like to call it) stems from a single game versus South Carolina when he was a freshman.

He's never been a workhorse (even playing v.s. inferior opponents), he's not that athletic (like, at all - go look as his measurements), aaaaaaand he's an idiot.

Draftniks like to think they're savvy by labeling him "THE MOST TALENTED RB IN THE DRAFT OMG" but the truth of it is he is mediocre and was an UDFA for a reason - nobody wanted him.

NOT EVEN IN THE 7TH ROUND.

Let that sink in for a second.

The thing with UDFAs is that it takes a combination of skill and luck to make an impact

Guys like Colston and Foster got UNBELIEVABLY lucky. Foster getting a chance to start late in the season due to injuries. Colston having Brees show up.

Crowell has barely played against a meaningful opponent in how many years?

Take Bryce Brown for example. He was a consensus star out of high school who had earlier successes in college, but due to off the field issues had to transfer, sit out, and miss time. He discussed that those missed practices, more so than games, hurt his ability to develop. Just like if you miss work for months on end. You're not going to magically get better or keep your wits if you're not out there honing your skills.

Crowell is not only a UDFA, but he's at-best 4th on the depth chart behind a guy they invested a 3rd round pick in who is pretty good and a guy they signed in FA to guaranteed dollars.

It makes zero sense, in my opinion, to draft or roster him. He'll be available by Week 1 or once bye weeks start, unless something truly incredible occurs (injuries, luck), which isn't likely. Wait on him.

The big thing that turns me off of Crowell is his utter lack of involvement in the passing game in college. If I counted right, he had a total of 26 catches in 3 years of college ball, and for my ppr leagues that just doesn't really bode well for me. And, to be honest, I haven't been overly impressed from what I've seen of his game period. Granted, that's based purely on youtube videos, but that almost makes it worse because those are supposed to be his best plays I suppose it's always possible he wins the backup spot in Cleveland, but I personally like West a fair amount more, and I wouldn't be shocked if Crowell doesn't even ultimately make the team.
