MFL vs CBS for dynasty leagues need pros and cons from users

Postby mullmania » Sun Mar 17, 2013 9:13 pm

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the dynasty landscape and just completed my first year on MFL and had a great time. We just moved our leauge over to CBS and it seems to lack the trading of draft picks and other functionally.

I am not looking for MFL/thread or CBS sucks posts...

I am looking for actual people who have used one or the other site, preferably both, that can explain possible advantages or shortcomings of either.

Please chime in with any and all pertinent information.

I dislike MFL quite a bit but haven't used CBS either.

I have not played on CBS but would highly recommend MFL.

Pros:
Rookie pick trading is allowed.
Very customizable league options including differential scoring by position as well as general aesthetic options.
Activity widget (shows when owners last visited the site).
Drafts that can include timers, which can even be set to pause at certain times like late night/early morning.
Decent built-in chat.

Cons:
Not free.
User interface can be a bit overwhelming first time around.

With the exception of aesthetic options (which I think is REALLY over rated) I don't see anything on your Pros that I can't find on other sites.

MFL Con:

What is the deal with having to transfer the league site every year? I hate that!

CBS is easily tops when it comes to aesthetics. The game day chat where all members in the league can chat to each other while watching games is a big plus for me. A lot of my league members go into that chat during the games. When it comes to a seasonal league, CBS can't be beat due to it's simplicity and layout. When it comes to dynasty, the features are sorely lacking. CBS isn't setup for dynasty leagues, at least not in any practical way. Everything has to be done manually.

MFL is ugly and awkward, but it has every feature you could need.

I'm in a few leagues on ESPN, and one of my bigger beefs with them is dealing with in-season trading of rookie picks, it cannot be done through the system. Considering the OP mentioned trading draft picks as an issue I assumed it was an issue on CBS as well.

Also as I previously stated I have never played on CBS, so I don't know if it includes any of those functions. My experiences are limited to ESPN, NFL.com and MFL. I can tell you that the other sites as far as I know don't really include anything I mentioned in any great capacity. ESPN has a built in chat I've never seen anyone use, and NFL.com uses google hangouts, but again never seen anyone use it.

With those as your only site experiences I could see leaning to MFL.

That's the truth. It's a very strange thing from a software perspective IMO. (And I used to run a software company.)

The CBS group chat for games seems really cool.

Totally agree with this. It's really annoying imo. Another thing I'm not fond of is the live scoring. My CBs league updates at a much higher rate then MFL. I've never tried a dynasty league on CBS but it's perfect for my keeper league.

Actually, this is a *fantastic* feature.

First off, all old seasons get archived. Which means you won't mess with your historical records. This gives you a "snapshot" of your league as it has progressed thru the years. This includes drafts, transactions, rosters, etc. If I want to easily see transactions from 2005 I can.

Second, how hard it is to transfer to the new season? It's about 3 button pushes and you're done. Maybe a couple more if you need to adjust salaries and contract (which you would need to do anyway). Pretty easy.

Third, this allows you to re-create historical seasons you used another service for or you only have paper records for. You can go back to 1985 I believe. 2005 was my first year with MFL. I used software from 2000 thru 2004 and recreated those seasons on MFL. 1999 I only had paper records so I was able to again create a historical season for 99 with all the matchups and final scores at least.

I think it would be a mess to have it all on one continual site. Could it be done? Sure. But why when what they have works so well. I'm not aware of any site that handles dynasty to even 10% of what MFL can and having archived historical seasons is a big part of the feature set in my opinion.

Sounds like you need to get on your commish then to get their act together.
In both my dynasty type leagues the commish creates the new season within a day of availability (usually a day or two after the SuperBowl).

Sounds like RTS may be an option then for the OP as well. CBS isn't for dynasty it appears.
