He is really good. I mean really really good…
Re: Devonta Smith
I had Chase-Devonta-Waddle as my 1-2-3 going into the 2021 season, but with Smith clearly ahead of Waddle. In my keeper draft, I had planned on getting the Chase-Devonta combo. I was very disappointed when Smith was drafted couple of picks after I took Chase, and I considered what my options were instead of going with a WR. I thought Smith was that far ahead of Waddle.
In the end, I drafted Waddle and am obviously very happy to have him. And it doesn't hurt that he's a Dolphin and it's always nice to have players from my favorite team. But I think Smith showed he has all the talent we (who think he'll be at least a high-end WR2) thought he had going into the season. I'm happy to have Waddle, but I'd be happy to have Smith also.

Re: Devonta Smith
After Hurts (reportedly) successfully campaigned for the team to bring in AJB, are there concerns about Devonta Smith? If you want to play worst case scenario, he's the #2 WR (with a strong receiving TE) in a run based offense with an inaccurate/questionable QB.
League #1- 14 tm ppr, 1Q, 2R, 3W, 1T, 1 R/W/T, 1K

League #3- 12 tm PPR, 1Q, 0R (yes, ZERO RB) 3W, 1T, 2 R/W/T flex, 1 Def

If we're looking for comps, how about Aiyuk, Bateman, Devante Parker, and whoever was the WR2 in Detroit? Teams that feature a TE as their #2receiving (or #1 in the case of Waller in '20) player don't usually have a fantasy-relevant WR2.

Re: Devonta Smith
If you're looking at just next year maybe. Depends on Hurts' development as a passer. The trade for AJB definitely shows they are trying to give Hurts everything to succeed and if he fails then theres no excuses for him. If he doesn't then they've got a great wide receiver core for the rookie they draft next year.Pullo Vision wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 11:30 am After Hurts (reportedly) successfully campaigned for the team to bring in AJB, are there concerns about Devonta Smith? The pessimistic parts were about the run based and questionable QB. You're run down of secondary receivers is... inspiring, lol. If AJB is a buy before reality sets in, is Devonta a sell before reality sets in?Anteaters wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 12:30 pmDoesn't sound like a worst case scenario to me. This description sounds like Tua's situation this year- give him elite weapons and it's on him if he fails.Pyro_6138 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 12:39 pmIf you're looking at just next year maybe. Re: Devonta Smith
The critical part for me is "before". A lot of people are going to get hung up on draft capital, real NFL and fantasy capital. Or hung up on what they perceive to be Devonta's true talent. Or hung up on his promising rookie numbers. Or hung up on the idea that because of all those things, even if Devonta's progression to fantasy T12WR is delayed a few years because of AJB's presence, Devonta will eventually get there.Pullo Vision wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 6:36 pmThe pessimistic parts were about the run based and questionable QB. I don't want to wait that long for a maybe. At this point, unless Devonta proves to be the alpha WR over AJB, Devonta will be relegated to WR2 status in Philly. And let's be honest, does even the most devoted Devonta devotee think he's a better WR than AJB? Nope. Because of AJB's youth, that means at least 3 seasons of seasoning before maybe Philly moves on from AJB and gives Devonta a chance to be the alpha WR in town. Maybe three seasons, maybe four, maybe five.
This isn't going to be a situation like Russ supporting DKM+Lockett, or Brady supporting Evans+Godwin. This is more likely to be like Diggs+?? or Hopkins+Kirk or Hollywood+Bateman ... meaning a disappointing result for Devonta owners.
So with all that in consideration, we get back to "before." I think it would be shrewd to bite the bullet and trade Devonta now, before every other fantasy manager realizes all this. If I could move Devonta for a late 1st, I'd be all over that trade right now. Or Devonta+ for a RB like Jacobs/Montgomery/Singletary and maybe even RBs a step down.
If AJB remains healthy all season, Devonta's rookie stats are certain to be better than his 2022 stats.

I like both of these WR's but Devonta will prove to be the better WR IMO. He is a way better technician in routes. He breaks DB's ankles. His route acumen is beyond elite.Anteaters wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 2:27 amThe critical part for me is "before". AJB looks way better without his shirt on and is a very good player but I just keep seeing a career path similar to Dez for some reason. He will have a few really good years but he muscles through his routes.
I intend to try to buy D. Smith where I don't own him hoping his owners think along your lines on these two players.

Re: Devonta Smith
As long as Hurts is QB, both these WR's are severely capped. If a rookie comes in, they will take time. Both players having their prime, especially AJB wasted. They won't produce the same way they could, had they gone to a better QB situation. It's too bad, but I'm not buying either, unless there is a severe discount. Easily replaceable numbers, especially for Devonta. He's not an over the middle guy, and AJB is built to be. Hurts just isn't accurate, and will struggle to maximize Devonta's skill set.

Re: Devonta Smith
There's an underrated shower narrative here, that the Eagles bringing in one of Jalen Hurts' best friends actually puts him a half-step closer to holding this job longer-term than a lot of people here are thinking. Certainly, AJB is coming to Philadelphia specifically to play with Hurts - they've already been training together, they're extremely close, Jalen asked Howie to go get him, and this now adds a slight degree of difficulty on any possible changeover.FantasyFreak wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 3:42 am As long as Hurts is QB, both these WR's are severely capped. If Hurts plays well, and they still kick him to the curb - they will run the risk of pissing off their newly prized offensive superstar. I know that's all ballyhoo "and he'll get over it" but it is there.
We didn't think much of Tannehill either before he had AJ Brown. I suspect we're about to find out he was doing a lot more for the Titans than we've thus far cared to admit. What if he does the same for his BFF, 2021 Top 10 fantasy QB and reigning QB Rushing Crown King, Jalen Hurts?
And if PFF Mike is right - and that the current way to win in the NFL is to flood the field with playmakers and overwhelm defenses - and this thing works out, whilst Jalen Hurts takes another step forward this year - y'know... just like he has every other year in his career...
Boy oh boy, I am going to be sooooooo insufferable for you poor fks. (Yes yes... "you mean even more than usual?")
As to Devonta - best believe he's the number 2, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Jalen will be looking for his BFF on every play, whether it's designed that way or not. Sorry Devonta owners.
