How to Balance a competitive team for the future?
How to Balance a competitive team for the future?
So this is a question I have had for a while now. Whats the difference between a win now team and a build for the future team? Are their times when you can do both win now and build for the future while doing so? I will give you an example below .What is your opinion on this subject? Feel free to use your teams as examples as well.

Re: the difference between a win now team and build for future team
I don't know that the concept applies to small leagues. It certainly does in 16 and 32 team single player pool, and I can normally tell the difference in 12 team, but even in 12 team leagues poor teams can gave a few lucky weeks and get into the playoffs, and therefore do both, but to answer your question really well built dynasties do it.
I have a league mate in a 16 team, who lives on selling guys after a year or two for top dollar and getting more and more firsts. Current roster on offense includes

Zeke gurley guice penny mixon

Kelce engram

Re: the difference between a win now team and build for future team
Well it’s kind of an obvious subject. For my team in sig, it’s very different from what it was last season after our startup. I drafted Dez and Jordy and after like week 5 or 6 I realized I had no shot even with 6 of 10 teams making the playoffs. So I sold off win now guys like Jordy and Dez for high upside players or picks to contenders. I sold Zeke when it looked like he might make it without being suspended along with Kelce for OBJ and my original 1st (which I knew would end up 1.01). I also stashed anyone and everyone with upside and/or draft capital that hadn’t broken out or was injured. Chad Williams, Curtis Samuel, Adam Shaheen, Gerald Everett, Patrick Mahomes, Mitch Trubisky. I traded for injured players like Cam Meredith. Once I was officially eliminated from the playoffs and locked in the 1.01 I dropped my defense for another stash player. Obviously I haven’t listed every trade or roster move, but overall I took what I thought was a no chance team and made it a playoff contender.
Re: the difference between a win now team and build for future team
Yeah the difference is obvious. I think the dream goal is to have both but that’s easier said then done.

Re: the difference between a win now team and build for future team
As stated above, this concept doesn’t really apply to small leagues (I’d say 10 or less). Especially with 8 teams, everyone’s so stacked that you can do both. Once you get to 12+ teams that’s when this comes into play. And the more teams you have the greater the disparity between ‘win now’ and rebuild.

Re: the difference between a win now team and build for future team
The shallower the league, the easier it is to do both. If you whiff on a pick or a trade, there is more leeway fill gaps and right the ship. In a deep league, a bad trade or bad draft can set you back years. There just aren't startable options to compensate for mistakes on the waiver wire.
In an ideal world, you could do both in a deep league but you'd need an awful lot of luck if the league is competitive imo.

I don't see any answers to your questions so I'll try it out.biglfoever33 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 4:41 pmWhats the difference between a win now team and a build for the future team?
Win Now = All your pieces are older, yet have projections so high for the current season that you're obviously a contender to win it all. That's the kicker though....... WIN IT ALL. To be good enough to maybe make the playoffs or maybe win some playoff games is not a "win now" team. It's an important distinction to make. A team with Brady, McCoy, Julio, AB, Olsen would be a win-now team. This is the kind of team you don't want to break apart because (1) You won't get a good enough return on value via trade and (2) it will weaken the team for this year. Basically, a "win now" team would create a lose-lose scenario when broken up.
Building For The Future = You're not going to win it all, it's not close, you're players aren't going to carry much value beyond this year or next, yet they will win just enough to keep you out of the top 5 for next year. What's the point of keeping these players around? Why build around them if you're just going to lose or be mediocre? A good example of a rebuilding team: Rivers, McCoy, DT, Dez, Gates. On the outside, it looks like this team has a shot. However, Rivers finished 15th last year and lost HH, McCoy is 30+ and this could be his last elite season, DT is declining every year and hard to predict, Dez isn't even on a team, and Gates is coming out of retirement. There's no way you wanna try to compete with this roster. You could sell McCoy for a 1st, and maybe bundle DT/Dez for another 1st. Rivers & Gates should be traded away for whatever the hell you can get. On top of all this, your next year's draft pick will go from a 1.07 to a 1.01 or 1.02 if you trade everyone now. That's a HUGE jump, equivilent to a 1st rounder in itself. You just went from finishing 6-7, getting the 1.07 overall and losing 4 players to retirement/oblivion, to finishing 0-13 and gaining the 1.01, 1.06, 1.12, 2.01 and two extra 2nds for a rebuild. Awesome job!

Re: the difference between a win now team and build for future team
Was just thinking about this, for me build for the future means increasing the value of your team independent of team needs, win now is increase the value of positions on your team in order to compete. Ideally moves should do both but sometimes you increase value at a position with an overpay

Re: the difference between a win now team and build for future team
IMO there is nothing worse than being a middle of the pack team, perpetually just missing the playoffs or losing in the 1st round of the playoffs and not getting a player that adds enough value in the following rookie draft. Unless you have a really good team that is also very young, I'm either focused on winning this year or building for the future. I'm not a big fan of trying to win this year if my team is marginal. The chances of winning 3 playoff games against the best teams in your league are slim. If this is the case I'm dumping all my older players and aiming to only add young upside players while tactfully punting to add high end picks for a year or two while I'm building my core.
I may neglect QB's, RB's, & TE's completely or trade for injured players while stockpiling young upside WR's. This way I can build for the future while also not being stuck in the middle of the pack in the process. When I feel confident that I have a core of WR's that can compete, then I'll trade or draft my RB's and trade for a high end TE and QB.

Re: the difference between a win now team and build for future team
In an 8 team league where resources are less scarce it wont be as noticeable. In bigger leagues there is more difference as young stud players are spread thin. That is where that future vs now building occurs. Of course you want some young studs as cornerstones regardless or when you are looking to win but in a 16 teamer the difference comes when as your wr 2 you choose between Doug Baldwin and corey davis or as your wr 3 you choose between fitz and Cortland Sutton or as a wr4 Edelman or James Washington. Now ea h time you can take some middle ground burn the more things are spread the more having those veterans will lead to wins.
Another thing to keep in mind the further you get from a startup the less chance talent is evenly spread so the more likely, with any non contract league anyway, that you will see teams great both now and in the future.

Re: the difference between a win now team and build for future team
i just had a startup and i dont think im in either camp. I'm setting up with guys I like (have made many trades), but have ample picks next year (3 firsts).
Cam/Jameis
Fournette/Royce/Chubb/Aaron Jones/Brieda/Barber/etc
Amari/Hogan/Robby/Dj Moore/Lee/Gallup etc
TE Kelce
I think my team is fine for this year, but have set myself up to be locked and loaded moving forward. Based on me having 3 firsts next year, you can tell I am very bullish of the WR pool in next years rookie draft.
I don't think it needs to be black and white and my answer to your question, is it totally depends on the scenario. I think the key regardless, is to make sure you have something sustainable now and also later. Just my personal preference. I don't believe in going all in, and I also kind of don't believe in blowing it up totally for the future. And by all in, I don't mean making a trade or two if you think it gets you a ship. I mean setting up from the get go with no regard for the future.
