One alternative we’re considering is just having all five playoff teams set a lineup for three weeks and highest cumulative score wins the belt. The lame part about that is that it eliminates the H2H element in the playoffs, which most owners would prefer to preserve. It also eliminates any advantage gained by earning a top seed.

This really bugs me WAY more than it should. It literally ruined my day yesterday.

What did you do for the 2020 season? There were byes as late as week 13 last year, which is effectively the same as week 14 byes this upcoming season (as far as playoffs go at least).

It was kinda wonky. Since there were no byes in week 12, we had everyone set a lineup that week but no regular season games were scheduled. Then we played our last regular season games on week 13 and used the week 12 scores for the first week of our playoffs. We jokingly called it the “back to the future” model. It wasn’t very popular, so I was hoping with the addition of a 17th game, we wouldn’t have to do something like that again. Sadly, we don’t even have the option to do that again even if we wanted to. It’s looking like playoff bye weeks is gonna be the least crappy solution.

Here's what I think we're doing in the league I commish.

12 team no divisions everyone plays everyone once through week 11.
Weeks 12-14 schedule will manually be changed to have teams play a pre playoff playoff. 1 v 12, 2 v 11, 3 v 10 etc.
6 team playoff schedule runs weeks 15-17, 3v6, 4v5 then next week 1 v worst etc.
No TANKING and I think the fact that the worst team each week is playing the best should help that somewhat. (In our discussions, it's been agreed teams MUST put in a justifiable lineup. You aren't putting in Brian Hill in place of Derrick Henry unless Henry ain't playing)

Why did I suggest this format? The middle of the pack teams, for a variety of reasons, are often somewhat tightly grouped and fighting to get in playoffs. I didn't want 3 random games, generated by MFL, that could make one of those teams trying to get in suddenly have to play the top 3 teams by some fluke.

Teams that have rookies coming on strong at end, great for them. Teams that had injuries early and now back competing, great for them. Teams currently decimated by injuries? Well they shouldn't be in championship anyway because they now won't have the firepower to compete anyway.

It also rewards the teams with the top schedules heading into week 12. I hope it also gives some bottom teams an incentive to stick it to a top team by trying to beat them.

My 12 team league just added a game so now playoffs are in week 15-17. Now every team in the league Plays each other at least once, division opponents twice. Seems like an easy fix and i dont see any major draw backs.

I like this for 12 team leagues with 3 divisions. Too many of my leagues got rid of divisions over past 3 years and getting them back may prove difficult.
