How to value rookie picks in unique league

Postby TyrannosaurusRex » Tue May 11, 2021 5:42 pm

So I’d like to see what the community has to say about this. I’m in a unique league where rookie picks are only tradable one year in advanced. For example right now only 2022 rookie picks can be traded, nothing further. How should I value picks in this league vs a normal dynasty league where you can trade picks up to 3 years in advanced? Does this make a 1st more valuable? Any input is appreciated.

Not being able to trade two years out doesn't change the value at all for me.
Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.

Sometimes people will say something like “Metcalf is worth atleast two 1sts.” But in this league unless you’ve acquired them from the upcoming year you can’t dish out two 1sts. So how does that change? Does one 1st become the value of two in a normal league? I’m not sure if I’m making this very clear lol

I think when people say "he is worth 2 1sts" they don't always specifically mean 2 1sts. Could be one 1st and a player that equals a first. Could be 2 players than each equal 1st.

Although I much prefer being able to trade 2 years out I'm in one league like you are describing. Value is the same as other leagues. The firsts chance hands pretty quickly as well.

While it might make some trades tougher to pull off just because you don’t have as many assets at your disposal, this setting shouldn’t change how you value future 1sts. If other owners in your league overvalue future 1sts just due to their limited availability, you should use that to your advantage and try to trade your own future 1sts for proven commodities.

If they literally demand two rookie firsts, you may have to trade for the first of a third party, then send both firsts for DK. Like others have said, send a player with rookie first round value plus your first. That usually works.

But to answer the question more directly, no, rookie picks don't double in value when you can't trade yours from two years out. It just makes blockbuster trades a little harder to pull off.
Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.

Firsts are a way to value players. You can value all players in terms of draft picks and then look for trades that have equal draft pick value on both sides. This caveat doesn't change anything for me except that I would be more hesitant to trade away my future 1st unless I have significant depth on my roster. I dont' want to trade away my pick then get crushed by injuries or loss of production and then have no way to trade back into those rookie picks.
