The OC said Sermon will be active Sunday

Pretty nice haul imo. Well done.kmbryant09 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 7:36 am Well, I finally cashed out on Sermon. I was the guy who wrote a lengthy post detailing why / how I ended up drafting Sermon at 1.08 even though I probably shouldn't have. Part of my rationale was to target a specific player's 2023 1st round pick, while I was unable to get my hands on that specific pick, I did get a pretty juicy looking '23 1st:
Gave - Trey Sermon / Marquez Callaway / '23 3rd (late)
Got - '23 1st (early) / '22 2nd (early)
Probably could have gotten more a week ago, but happy to turn a late 1st in an average class and a WW pickup into an early 2nd and early 1st in better classes.

Re: Trey Sermon
That's a start, then the question becomes will he play? And if so, how much? I only have him in a keeper league, but until usage becomes a little more clear, I figure he has to stay on the bench.

(a bit overexaggerated given the unknowns of Sermon, but that's a trade you take and run with)
Re: Trey Sermon
As a resident Niner fan and RB guy, I want to add something before it happens. Sermon is expected to be the starter, so this is what to look out for:
The Niners run outside zone as the bread and butter of their offense. They use it about a third of the time, as it sets up all kind of pass plays. In order for it to be efficient, they need a RB with extreme lateral quickness to get around the tight end (Kittle) who is setting the edge.
My beef with Sermon being a 49er is that he doesn't have the speed to make that play. Mostert, Wilson, Hasty, and Mitchell all do. With all those guys out and with nobody else that has that kind of quickness in the backfield, the question is: Will the 49ers run that play, or will they change their offense entirely?
If Sermon has a huge game but it's all inside, I think we all need to be cautious going forward since that's not the usual 49ers offense. If the Niners run outside zone and Sermon has a big day doing it, then that would be amazing for his value going forward. A bad day either way would obviously hurt.
So anyway, I hope he has a big day for the 49ers sake and all you Sermon owners. gl!

Re: Trey Sermon
sssooo... how did he look? i only watched the beginning of the game and the niners looked like they actually tried not to have him out there. did it get better?
Re: Trey Sermon
He did have a couple decent runs in the second half, but as Mike mentioned before, they were all inside runs. Not sure that's what Shanahan wants to do long term, likely just forced due to Sermons lack of speed. As expected, this backfield is a mess.killer_of_giants wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 4:44 am sssooo... how did he look? i only watched the beginning of the game and the niners looked like they actually tried not to have him out there. did it get better?
Re: Trey Sermon
Sermon can do inside runs, as expected. He's taking over the Tevin Coleman role in this offense.killer_of_giants wrote: ↑Mon Sep 27, 2021 4:44 amsssooo... how did he look? i only watched the beginning of the game and the niners looked like they actually tried not to have him out there. did it get better?
They tried to run a modified outside zone almost immediately, and it did not go well. Kittle tried to set the edge about 5-10 yards from where he usually does and Juszczyk was doing a kickout block on the end. This shortened the distance that Sermon had to cover but it still didn't matter as he couldn't get there in time and the hole was gone. They didn't try that play again.
In the years I've seen Shanahan football in San Francisco, I've never seen them run that play just one time. It took an entire half to figure out how to adjust. The fact that the Niners made the game competitive and almost won without their standard offense is amazing.
But no, Sermon is no threat to Mitchell, Hasty, or Wilson when any one of those guys return. He'll be solid inside the tackles, but you'd be lucky to see Sermon get 10 touches per game when other RBs return to full health. Sermon is not the future of this offense.
