I think it hurts both of them. Adding a PPR type satellite back is a bummer for Sanders, who is unlikely to ever put up Nick Chubb-Derrick Henry numbers on the ground. If Gainwell was going to end up in a place with a clear starter, you would’ve hoped it was somewhere that the starter didn’t contribute as much in the passing game.

Chubb averaged more YPC and was second in the league in rushing DVOA despite handling more carries.

Sanders is good, but he doesn’t have the skill set to be a RB1 without significant receiving work. This isn’t some damning criticism, it’s true of most RBs. I listed Henry and Chubb because I think they’re exceptions.

I’m not panic-selling Sanders or anything, but I think pretending like this doesn’t matter is short-sighted.

Honestly might be best case scenario. Sanders is now almost guaranteed goal line work because they didn't draft a thumper. As long as he can stay healthy, he should be in line for a big role. This probably spells the end of the Boston Scott era as Gainwell probably slots in as the new coaching staff's favorite change of pace runner.

Kylin Hill, Jermar Jefferson, Tamorrion Terry....2nd and 3rd round picks in many rookie drafts who are lucky to get drafted here. This draft is absolutely brutal this year.

Haha the landing spots for UDFA RBs are way better with wide open depth charts in Miami and Atlanta.
