Jets are too atrocious to even make an assessment right now. We'll see if they bungle this draft or not. They need to go Jeudy in the first, then OL, OL, OL.

If they don't get him some playmakers and blocking it'll be over before he has a shot.

This past game is basically what I am expecting to see by Darnold when I referred to 3 steps forward 2 back - a couple of bad games (weeks 7-8-9) followed by a couple of good games (10). Regardless I was pretty impressed by the performance this week.

Not to mention a pretty favorable schedule going forward. Should help him have a strong end of season hopefully.

If Gase is fired - boost for Darnold?

Postby NWABCS » Sat Oct 03, 2020 7:23 am

In my startup two years ago, I got Darnold late and felt like I'd won the lottery. He was my favorite QB hands down. Then Gase ruined him. Well.. the JETS ruined him.

If Adam Gase is fired, does that give any Darnold owners hope? I'd assume Greg Williams would take over and he had people believing in Baker Mayfield. Can he do that with Darnold? Granted the JETS don't have much offensive firepower.

And a second question... I'm looking at moving Darnold. I offered him/mike Evans for Josh Allen or Watson with Fuller and got shot down so I need to add more. Should I wait in hopes of renewed life and value for Darnold when (not if) Gase gets the boot?

That's a good point.

I'm impatient. After losing that Denver game, I was sure that Gase was gone.

The problem is a ton of media is reporting the NYJ ownership has no interest in firing Gase in a likely lost season regardless. Basically, they know they suck, they don't care, and think it would be pointless to make any immediate positive change. This is how bad franchises stay bad, top to bottom.

So expecting any significant NYJ player trade value right now (and maybe most of the season) isn't realistic.

NYJ shouldnlt fire gase. Anyone they bring in will be better and make their draft position worse

This lol

Also regarding Darnold, Gase being fired would be good, but getting traded to another team entirely (to be their starter) would be even better for Darnold

Replacing Gase might make the team’s offense marginally better in the short term, thus boosting Darnold. However that offense is devoid of talent both at the skill positions and the O Line. A coaching change might get more out of the roster but it won’t fix the talent deficit. Also Darnold hasn’t inspired confidence that he would play better in a better situation. He’s been bad.

The most important consideration for Darnold in dynasty is his situation next year. The Jets are almost assured to draft a new franchise QB making Darnold dead weight. Unless Darnold is traded next year will be another lost one for him. He’d then have to try and catch on as a priority backup or find a QB competition on what is likely another bad franchise (the good ones have good QBs). All of this has me skeptical that Darnold will ever be given an opportunity to succeed in the NFL. It’s unfortunate and arguably unfair but it’s reality.

So the post Gase breakout narrative doesn’t really hold for me. Players like Parker were already guaranteed some level of opportunity, but each team only starts one QB. Ryan Tannehill is the best case scenario, but I wouldn’t use his career path as justification for what will likely happen to Darnold. Remember that Tannehill was only given a shot because of Mariota’s poor play, not because he had earned starting consideration. It’s very rare that failed rookie QBs get a legitimate second chance.
10 Team Half PPR Scoring SF
QB: Mahomes, Hurts, Minshew

WR: A.J. Brown, Diggs, K. Allen, C. Watson, Cooks, Pickens, W. Robinson
TE: Kelce, J. Smith, Musgrave

If Gase is not your OC or HC, then it's an automatic upgrade.

But, as other have mentioned, if the Jets finish with one of the worst records in the NFL, they could move on for Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields. If they decide not to, then they could be in position to bolster their offensive line with Penei Sewell, who's viewed as a sure thing. So, that could boost Darnold.

If you're the Jets, I think you need to go after Eric Bienemy or Josh McDaniels and improve the offensive line.

Gase SUCKS! Incredibly frustrated.

Darnold has had some pretty bad plays but he’s also made some amazing scrambles and throws, or avoided heavy pressure and made plays.

I think he could have been amazing on a different team. Very sad.

Yeah, potentially decent QBs get ruined all the time. Look at how many the Browns alone have destroyed over the decades. Though it's always tough to figure out how good some QBs - like Darnold - really are or could be.

This. Darnold has immense talent, but could be close-to-broken as a player at this point. Confidence and a "winners mentality" are hard things to maintain when you're doing nothing but getting your @ss kicked every week... he's seeing ghosts out there!

From here, he needs everything to go right - and unfortunately, he's playing for a team where everything goes (and is done) wrong. Even if Gase is fired, there is clearly no-one in the building that is aiding Darnold's development as a pro... and there's literally zero talent around him to prop him up, even if Gase was removed and the scheme was changed. So there's no immediate-term "boost" coming.

If you're a Darnold owner, you're doomed to hold at this point. You're hoping he gets traded to a good franchise next year, that he can be coached out of his mechanical and decision-making problems (that are still the same ones present as from college) AND that he is indeed the talent we all wanted to believe he is, when he was drafted.

I think the best case scenario would be the Steelers. But even then, you're now waiting on Ben... I think Darnold's future is incredibly murky. As I said at the top - he needs everything to go right from here... and nothing more to go wrong.

Off season trade to Indy to replace a retired Rivers would be ideal... Either way, there will be a post-Gase value bump even if it's just perceived to be that way and doesn't end up with him being any better on the field.
