Not a surprise to me.
Benching Hurts was an embarrassment to the league, the fans, the city.

I guess I assumed he did that with a green light.

I would have assumed so too...btw I love when the Eagles do something a lot of the other teams in the league have done for years there is all this silly pearl clutching. Not an Eagles fan at all but maybe if the Giants won one more game we wouldn't be hearing people whine about a 6-10 team not making the playoffs lol.

That said, depending who they hire and the QB situation in Philly, this could be very interesting for fantasy.

To me it almost looked like he wanted out of Philly. That was the strangest decision I have ever seen after already benching the starter. His reasoning was just as crazy as the move.

Maybe he was told to do that but he said it was all on him.

For a team that won a Super Bowl not too long ago, not going to be a lot of people lining up for this job........

My guess is they want someone to resurrect Wentz because of the investment and Pederson either didn’t want to or was viewed as incapable of doing so.

Until we hear more this appears to be bad news for Hurtz even though he’s the better player.

A lot of questions for this team going forward. Will Wentz be the QB, Hurts? or maybe the new coach brings in a new guy. Why is this offense so bad? seemed like a good young core behind a solid offensive line not that long ago. Now the blow it up.

It's definitely bad news for Hurts. This clears the way for the aggrieved Wentz to remain the starter - his comments about his relationship with DP being "fractured beyond repair" pretty much sealed the "me or him" choice that they faced here - and unsurprisingly, the guy with the untradeable albatross contract won out.

Apparently, though, it was DP's vision for the future that led to the split. Per the Philly Inquirer:
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie was "underwhelmed" by coach Doug Pederson's suggestions to improve the coaching staff.
Pederson apparently proposed some in-house shuffling as a way to goose his staff. Per reporter Jeff McLane, Lurie instead wants "external candidates with top credentials." That's apparently somewhere GM Howie Roseman will have to take the lead because Pederson "has been lacking in that area." Things certainly do not sound like they are going well in Philly between the coach, owner and general manager.
And per Rappaport right now:
After speaking with two people close to former #Eagles coach Doug Pederson, it sounds like this is what it boiled down: Pederson was sick of people telling him what to do.
To read the writing between the lines... Doug was suggesting they keep continuity, re-hire staff that they'd lost to other organisations whilst promoting from within, and be generally open to a QB competition in 2021.

Meanwhile, what Lurie was looking for was a splash name to come in and "fix" things... and to attempt to re-coup Wentz' value as a starter in the league. I mean... maybe things will improve...
Attached to the hip with former first-round quarterback Carson Wentz, owner Jeffrey Lurie decidedly sided with righting Wentz over keeping Pederson after five seasons and a win in Super Bowl LII. Wentz’s relationship with Pederson was reportedly “fractured beyond repair," leading the 28-year-old backup to demand a trade from the team after he threw a league-high 15 interceptions and took an NFL-high 50 sacks.
... or maybe they won't. I guess taking 25 sacks would be an improvement.

It was over for Pederson in the days following the benching of Hurts, a few of the players said they didn't agree with it, were angry, had no idea what he was doing etc. A coach cant lead a group of players that don't trust him.

How did sucking for Luck work for the Colts? Their tanking the season for Luck was a much bigger embarrassment to the league than what the Eagles did. And yet, the Colts are lauded for it and celebrated.
In fact, embarrassment to the league would have been if the Giants made the playoffs.

Pederson delivered the Eagles their first Super Bowl, with a back up QB, AND got fired so quickly thereafter. Seems he should have had a little more of a leash.

I do agree the players being pissed at Pederson was an issue, but I believe that would have passed over.

Ironically, if Pederson did get fired because he didn't want to go with Wentz next season....he would have been much better off having Hurts come back and win the last game against Washington.

Hurts was playing better than wentz last season but wentz has years of top end qb play on his resume. I don’t think anyone should assume hurts will be clearly better than wentz moving forward.

I know that this appears to be Philly choosing Wentz over Pederson, but isn't it very possible, if not likely, that they are choosing neither?

I have no idea how Lurie and Roseman feel about Wentz or Hurts, but anyone with 2 eyes saw that Philly's offense was DRAMATICALLY improved with Hurts under center.

It may be a pipe dream, but the one name I've heard heavily linked to that job is Lincoln Riley. I imagine it would take a small fortune to pry him from Oklahoma, but apparently he has inside ties to Lurie and/or Roseman - and he has obvious ties to Jalen Hurts.

As a Hurts / Sanders / Reagor owner, I'm going to fantasize about their potential production in Riley's offense   one can dream, right?

It really wasn't, though - this is a lazy narrative of the "boomer dad" variety. This wasn't a mid-season mutiny. Saying he's lost the locker room when the players have another 9 months to get over it... weak narrative. The Eagles outright posted on their website that they were going to give Sudfield snaps in the game. Peterson said it was done "with the interests of winning the game" which is demonstratively untrue - because he was being a good soldier, and because this was what Howie had told him to do in a meaningless game.

https://www.bleacherreport.com/articles ... gles-lurie

Again, and as I said above - DP lost his job today because his vision for the future involved retread coaches that have already been in the Eagles ecosystem. Lurie wants a splash name to come in and fix his 100 million dollar quarterback. DP doesn't want to sign up for that any further.

Can't say I blame him.
