Robert Tonyan TE Green Bay

Postby John Paul » Mon Oct 05, 2020 7:57 pm

It appears to be his coming-out party. I rostered him off of WW last week. Wondering if anyone is adding him to the trade block. If so, what are you looking for? I already have Waller and Andrews so Tonyan is a luxury right now.

Even in a tight end prem I think I'd sell for a 2nd. He is kind of a last man standing(though there have been hints of this for years). I am not currently watching the game though so maybe his play and box score are actually aligning?

I’ve always ignored Green Bay TE’s but I did get this guy on my roster since this is a new era of Packers football and system. I could use his production on my contender of a team (Gesicki and Goedert) but I will still be shopping him all week. If no takers then I suppose he’ll go in my lineup week 6.

I’ve pimped Tonyan pretty well in the past before finally dropping him after week 1 (of course). I believe in the talent and what he’s gone through to turn himself into a competent TE, but I can’t help but wonder what happens to all TE targets when Adams and Lazard return. Does he just fade into that very large group of TD dependent TE2s?

I have to wonder how much of his target share really came because of Adams and Lazard being out. That being said, it looked like he had a really good rapport with Rogers and certainly has the size of a tight end. He did catch all 6 of his targets, and all 5 of his targets last week. I don't think he'll get peppered with targets like some of the upper tier TEs but he's a big guy and a great redzone target. Also important to note he was undrafted.

I think selling him for a second, if you need the spot and not the player, makes sense. I certainly wouldn't be selling him for less than that.

If Jermichael Finley and Jimmy Graham never became studs in GB, I have my doubts on Tonyan. Rodgers just isn't a TE guy. Maybe Tonyan catches a few extra TDs but I don't see the targets and yards repeating. I'd sell immediately if I got a good offer (2nd?).

This is where I'm at. Once Adams & Lazard get back, Tonyan will see less attention. I think he still has built something here though so I'd roster him, just don't get your hopes too high here. Rodgers has always preferred his WRs & RBs over TEs, I don't expect that to change.

I'm not so sure those two are a reason to discount Tonyan.

We're testing my memory here, but I feel like Finley's issues were primarily injuries. He did well when playing I think.

Jimmy has been washed for years. One of the most frustrating players I've ever owned, and I've owned him many different seasons.

This performance just gives me more false hope that a TE in Green Bay can be effective. He may put up decent numbers on occasion, but much of this success comes from the Packers having no weapons available and ATL being poor against TEs (and in general). Rodgers can make anyone stand out when it's needed...and last 2 weeks they have had no other option.

The positive-at a position with no clear cut top options outside of Kittle, Kelce, and maybe Andrews, he's as good a bet as any to put up TE1 numbers any given week.

TE vs ATL through 4 weeks:
33 receptions, 366 yards, 7 TDs.

Context is important. To expect anyone to pay a 2nd is nuts in my opinion. To assume Tonyan's target share stays consistant after the wr corp is healthy is wishful thinking at best. To me - this he is an immediate sell / flip. Sell high, buy low. I will not be pursuing him in any league as he is very clearly fool's gold. Don't be a point chaser. People that have dynasty experiance should know better.

Well a 2nd is what you should want to move him. For anything less than that it's probably worth it to see it through. Not sure how it can be fools gold. Even when Adams comes back Tonyan is looking like he'll be the 2nd option. If he was fools gold we'd be talking about a 1st here.

If I had him I think I’d hold him as I think this is just the beginning for him. What makes me think this? I remember last year seeing a video of a Rogers talking about him and he said something like, “Don’t sleep on Robert, he’s going to be a star in this league”. It’s taken a while but he is getting more involved and showing that he is capable and he already has Rogers endorsement.

The guy stepped up with Adams and Lazard out. Rodgers needed someone to throw to besides vertical threat MVS

I don’t think this was as much a coming out party as much as a flash in the plan.
