2020 Backup QB Rankings
In several of my leagues, there's been more buying depth and marginal pieces than I'd expect at this point of the off season.
In some of them, QB scoring helps push up their value. Given Covid could take out starting QBs, curious how people would rank the backups. This isn't strictly about 2020- one of these could be this year's Ryan Tannehill. As an added layer, where would you rank 2021 picks in this?
These are based on the #2 QBs on MFL's depth charts.
Tier 1- best combo of NFL-proven talent and current offensive scheme (combo of long and short term)
Jameis Winston, New Orleans
Andy Dalton, Dallas
Case Keenum, Cleveland
Tier 2 (rookie gambles and lesser vet talents)
Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis
Nick Foles, Chicago
Robert Griffin, Baltimore
Tua Tagovailoa, Miami
Jordan Love, Green Bay
Justin Herbert, LA Chargers
Jarrett Stidham, New England
Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia
Marcus Mariota, Las Vegas
Nick Mullens, San Francisco
Tier 3 (Low value vets who can be effective short term band aids)
Matt Schaub, Atlanta
Chad Henne, Kansas City
Joe Flacco, NY Jets
Mason Rudolph, Pittsburgh
Geno Smith, Seattle
AJ McCarron, Houston
Tier 4 (grab bag of unproven talent, poor situation, or both)
Kyle Allen, Washington
Mike Glennon, Jacksonville
Colt McCoy, NY Giants
Jeff Driskel, Denver
Blaine Gabbert, Tampa Bay
Brett Hundley, Arizona
Matt Barkley, Buffalo
Will Grier, Carolina
Ryan Finley, Cincinnati
Chase Daniel, Detroit
Sean Mannion, Minnesota
John Wolford, LA Rams
Logan Woodside, Tennessee

Re: 2020 Backup QB Rankings
Good catch, I forgot Washington. Stopped at Tennessee.
Allen doesn't impress me as a talent and I'd be thinking putting him in the McCarron/McCoy area. How much higher you put him hinges on how you see his situation- can he usurp Haskins, and what would be the impact of Allen's relationship with Rivera, I'd think. If Allen outplays him or Haskins underperforms, Allen could earn a one year band aid value. Long term, I don't see the talent to keep the front office from beating a high-value FA/draftee.

foles in tier 1 as the most likely to be the starter early on without any injuries occurring.

Re: 2020 Backup QB Rankings
With his rushing talent and Wentz’ penchant for injury, I’d have Hurts in the top tier for fantasy production purposes.
Also, holy crap I can’t believe Matt Schaub is still collecting an NFL paycheck...

Agreed. CHI has a charmin soft pass schedule, it could actually be a very big year for Foles.killer_of_giants wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 4:28 am foles in tier 1 as the most likely to be the starter early on without any injuries occurring.

Re: 2020 Backup QB Rankings
Long-term I think Hurts is a really good QB, starting caliber. However, I can never bring myself to burn a roster spot on QBs/TEs who I know will have to season for 3-4 years. Those positions just don't hold enough value for me.

Re: 2020 Backup QB Rankings
This isn't your average season. Plenty of players are going to be thrust into positions we'd never expect them to be at so early on. It's picking who is already marinated versus who's going to burn on the grill.CL3VELANDBR0WNS wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:41 am Long-term I think Hurts is a really good QB, starting caliber. Re: 2020 Backup QB Rankings
Oh, I think he would be trash as a passer, but he could probably put up enough rushing upside right now to be startable were he thrust into the lead role in Philly.CL3VELANDBR0WNS wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:41 am Long-term I think Hurts is a really good QB, starting caliber. Re: 2020 Backup QB Rankings
"Not bad for a running back" - Lamar Jackson
Hurts is not Lamar**** (disclaimer)
But Hurts could be a RG3/Tebow type where he dazzles enough for a season until teams grab more tape and figure him out. The hardest thing to plan for is the unknown and Hurts is good at not knowing what he's going to do next.

Re: 2020 Backup QB Rankings
Nick Foles backup ? Does it mean Trubisky is still the starter ? Was expected him to be thrown out the job
Re: 2020 Backup QB Rankings
Maybe it's just me, but I would still take a chance on Rosen over most of the guys in tiers 3 +4.
