This year's Austin Ekeler?

Postby CJRousseau » Tue Jun 16, 2020 11:47 am

Last year we saw Melvin Gordon make the poor decision to hold out which allowed Austin Ekeler to explode to a PPR RB 2 finish. With the news of Dalvin Cook feeling "disrespected" by the Vikings contract offer and deciding to (almost) definitely hold out as a result- is Alexander Mattison this year's Austin Ekeler?

I don't see him finishing as the RB 2, but especially if Cook holds out longer than the four games Gordon did last year (maybe even half the year?), Mattison could certainly sneak into the top twelve. I picked him up in a dispersal draft recently and am loving the possibility of getting RB 1 value from him for a month or two.

The new CBA changes things so we still have to see if Cook really does hold out, but if he decides to Mattison is a fantastic value right now.

I may be in the minority, but the Mattison hype is getting a little out of hand to me. He is a great hand cuff, but that is all he is. Dalvin is going to get signed based what I am hearing. His value IMO is only to the Cook owner

I think the situations are different between Cook and Gordon. I still think they get a deal done prior to the start of the season.

Matttison couldn't even stay healthy with a minimal role. Boone would definitely get some work. Mattison is a back up caliber RB to me. Good to spell your lead back when he's fresh, but not a guy who you would want getting the bulk of the carries. Can hardly wait until Cook signs so people can stop over hyping and over valuing Mattison. He's not a fantastic value because people who have him suddenly think he's worth a lot more just because Cook is going through contract negotiations that we basically knew were going to happen.

I'll take Mike Boone off the FA list for free before I pay the asking price for Mattison.

Maybe a better question is who is this year's PPR committee back who can turn that role into fantasy gold. Mattison wouldn't be that guy.

Some hype building around Hines as the PPR back for Rivers. Rivers can't throw down field so expect more dump offs and Hines could benefit. CEH is another candidate being the presumed receiving back for KC.

People said similar things about Ekeler last year (and many still do). In 2018 he played one game without Gordon, looked bad/inefficient and got hurt

I am not saying Mattison will do as well; but if Cook did actually sit, the Vikings run more than enough for Mattison to be a high RB2 and for Boone to still take some work

Not sure that scenario will happen but I also disagree with the notion someone has to be hyper talented (like Cook) to be a solid fantasy play

I will go with Phillip Lyndsay. He hasn't shown to be a good receiving back yet, but he has played significantly, a veteran, and his perceived value is low. Plus, he is the number 2 back to Gordon and we all know how well that turn out for Gordon's number 2 last year.

I'm not sure when Lindsay is a FA, but this is a big year for him. One way or another, his talent will show this year and he'll eventually be paid his worth.
Prescott, Tua
Chubb, Carson, D. Harris, Lindsay
C Lamb, C. Kupp, Chase Claypool, Robby Anderson, Ruggs, P. Campbell, Preston Wilson

Basically the consensus in the football media is Dalvin will get signed, that's what he's referring to. Cook can only miss 5 days of camp, and must report day 1 I believe, or he loses his accrued year. He has threatened to hold out, but it's June. Almost nobody who has anything to do with football believes Cook will miss any time. That's what he is most likely referring to.

According to Cecil Lammey, a Denver beat reporter, he's just not that strong a receiver. Gordon's number 2 wasn't arbitrarily successful. He was successful because he's a really good football player. Lindsay will never get paid what he's worth, IMO. He's going to be and RFA next year. So if they keep him, which they probably will, he will be a UDFA when he is almost 28. He's turning 26 next month. Sadly, Lindsay will probably never get a very good deal.

I understand that. This is also a new CBA. Gordon's situation would also lend to the likelihood that Cook doesn't hold out, based on how it turned out for him. I think the odds Cooks misses time are minimal.

Yea that's why I brought up the CBA in my original post, but I'm a hopeful Mattison owner. I'd at least like for the hype to build a bit more so I can flip Mattison for an actual starter around the start of the season.

For sure. Have you approached the Cook owner? Some are more skittish on these issues than others.
