I never heard. My guess is he bet on himself. Probably was told he would be a 2nd rounder due to the deep class and overshadowed by Jeudy at least. Even though Smith out -produced him. This is just a guess and it looks like it worked out.
This is my guess as well.

Only slight downside for rookie drafts is that Smith will be 23 midway through his rookie year (ditto for Waddle).

I read an interview with Mac Jones where he said Smith went back to improve his draft stock, so it sounds like that’s the case.

I do find it a little strange how last year he was seen as second round rookie draft pick, and all he’s really done is go back and beat up a heap of weakened teams at 22 years old and he’s suddenly the 1.01 in a lot of places I’m reading lol

Also led the NCAA in screens caught, that was enough for some people to fade Aiyuk.

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Devonta as the WR1 of this class.

I have seen a lot of Alabama scheming Devontae Smith open. None of that impresses me as that won't help him in the NFL. I saw he beat a guy deep, but the defender didn't even touch him off the line of scrimmage. I missed his first couple of catches, so not sure what he did there.

I want to like Devontae Smith, as I have the 3rd pick and I don't like that JaMarr Chase sat out this season. But I'm not getting overly excited about pushing Smith up to WR1.

I've been more impressed with Najee Harris.

His size and lack of athleticism vs NFL DB's scares me. I would have a hard time taking him that early. I would probably look at trading back or taking the next man up.

Smith doesn't even need the manufactured touches; he can get open at will. But, it's always smart for an OC to realize that you should get the ball to your best player anyway you can.

I have to say, the catch Smith made that I was most impressed with was early in the game where he reaches for a ball thrown on the sideline and he taps both feet. He is going to be a better version of Calvin Ridley, and I love Calvin Ridley.

That catch where he torched some scrub linebacker down the seam sums up his season for me.

Not saying he’s bad, as he’s clearly not, but I’m not paying a top 4 pick for someone who will have a BMI that normally costs an early second.

You think he will lack athleticism or weight-adjusted athleticism? I think his raw speed/quickness will test pretty well, same as Jeudy/Ridley

I completely understand what youre saying.. but its not like Weve never seen a WR with this body type have success (Marvin Harrison)... and he just looks absolutely unstoppable no matter what defenses do to take him out of the game.

Waddle supposedly passed all his rehab assignments and had full ROM, but the way he looked like a wounded gazelle just flopping around was hard to watch. Was he trying to push his draft stock down?

From what was said, it wasn't about the draft at all. Waddle wanted to be part of the national championship game one more time before he went to the NFL. Seems like a solid team player.
