The Red Rifle Thread: Dalton Short Leash in Chicago
Andy Dalton
NFL.com's Tom Pelissero reports the Bengals will bench Andy Dalton following their Week 9 bye.
A move several years in the making, we are still surprised the arch-conservative Bengals are making it. The Bengals will turn to fourth-round rookie Ryan Finley following their Week 9 bye. He'll be taking on the Ravens. There was no longer any point in leaving 32-year-old Dalton under center for an 0-8 team. Missing his No. 1 receiver and playing behind a bombed-out offensive line, Dalton had struggled to do anything positive this season. After a mini career peak in 2015 that ended with a finger injury, Dalton has found himself in a mostly-endless valley. The most ordinary starter in the NFL has looked more and more like a backup. Nevertheless, quarterback-desperate teams are sure to phone before Tuesday's trade deadline, but moving Dalton would not be the Bengals' style.

Re: Andy Dalton
Does anyone honestly think Finley profiles as anything more than a career backup? Dink and dunker with middling arm strength is all I know, would be interested if anyone else sees something more?

Re: Andy Dalton
A huge arm isn't necessary to succeed...That being said I think Ryan Finley is most likely not the long term solution there.
Still he has some value in SF leagues or deep leagues as he will probably start the rest of the season.
Seeing the Bengals record and the QBs coming out this year, I can pretty confidently bet they will be drafting one who will be given every chance to start.
Finley would have to light the world on fire this season to even have a shot. It's borderline impossible, as watching the Bengals Dalton had no chance to succeed behind that line. Could see Dalton traded to Chicago or maybe Denver or to the Steelers if they weren't rivals.
Re: Andy Dalton
Nope, Finley is like not the answer, but might as well see what you have in him.
Re: Andy Dalton
Finley looked good in the preseason and might be decent this year, but definitely not the long term answer. The Bengals will have a very early 1st in 2020 and I'd expect them to use it on a QB. I also hope they use some of their picks on linemen to keep that rookie QB upright and help Mixon run the ball better.
As for Dalton, I can see him get moved like Flacco did during the offseason to a team who thinks they're competing and needs a veteran QB to help them. I don't think he'll have much value regardless, but wouldn't shock me if he got another opportunity to at least compete for a starting job.

Yeah, as a betting man I would probably still go with this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^. Depending on the odds though, I suppose my arm could be twisted into betting the other side if it is at least +200 or so.

Re: Andy Dalton
Who would have thought that the Bengals without Marvin Lewis would be this much of a disaster.
Finley is not good, he will just be keeping the seat warm for the highly picked rookie next year.
The Bengals would be wise to trade Dalton, AJG, and Eifert. So they probably won't.

Re: Andy Dalton
Should trade Dunlap, Atkins and Kirkpatrick too. People can rag on the Dolphins all they want, but at least they have fully embraced what they are, have a plan and are executing it.Phaded wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2019 11:27 am Who would have thought that the Bengals without Marvin Lewis would be this much of a disaster.

Re: Andy Dalton
Would you add Finley if it means dropping Houston defense or Luke Wilson in Seattle?

Re: Andy Dalton
I guess that the market was not there for any of them, or the backlash (at least for a player like Green) would have been too much to risk for whatever the price may have been. Green is basically the Bengals version of Fitzgerald perhaps.Phaded wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2019 11:27 am Who would have thought that the Bengals without Marvin Lewis would be this much of a disaster.

Re: Andy Dalton
I genuinely feel for the guy. He's shown he's capable when he has pieces around him.
I understand benching him to see what you have in Finley, but on his birthday and without letting him know personally is a dick move.
Andy does so much for the community here, sad to see him get the shaft from such an awful organization.
