The Courtland Sutton Thread

Big body guy. Enough speed but lacks separation. Great agility metrics. Decent enough hands and body control. Can he really be a wr1? Is he more Dez or more Treadwell? Just am so unsure in this draft.. feel like there's some big-time sleeper bust potential to many of these guys.

I have not dived too much into WR tape at this point - but from what I have seen (very small sample size), it is neither but you are looking at one extreme or the other. Based on what I have seen (given its tape from 2 games), he is a better prospect than Treadwell was. How much so, I cannot say with confidence without diving more into it (which I will, just not until later) - but I already know I am not crazy about him and cannot see him as a WR1.

He's much closer to Alshon Jeffery than either of those guys

Metrics wise he's way better than Treadwell. It's not hard to see why Treadwell is a bust. He is not athletic enough to separate vs NFL corners, and lacks the athleticism to win 50/50 balls.

I think he is somwhere in between Dez and Treadwelll. Not going to be as good or bad as the 2 examples you have used.

Strongly agree with this.

Also share the sentiment that Sutton is very close to Alshon.

Good to know I appreciate it. Alshon in the right situation is a decent floor prospect-wise.

Sutton is a good prospect with a decently high ceiling. He doesn’t look like a potential top 10 WR though to me.

He’s a worthwhile pick in the first round of rookie drafts. I wouldn’t expect him to develop into an elite guy though. Alshon is a pretty fair comparison.

Measurables and combine all comparable to Jeffrey. He will create separation just fine

Sutton is a kind of tough eval. I thought he doesn’t look any better than Treadwell or mike Williams on tape, and you could argue Sutton looks more raw and less skilled than those two. However he has he athleticism they didn’t. I don’t think he’s Dez or Treadwell, rather he’s somewhere in between the two.

I like this.

I also think it's important to note the eb and flow of wr vs cb. CBs are big right now, so we're seeing a little shift to smaller, more agile receivers having success relative to the size, speed freaks. Yes, I understand there are guys like Julio, AJG and that's really it. I'd usually have Evans listed but he didn't have a monster year. I'd have Michael Thomas but he isnt one of those freak athletes.

So, although Sutton might be as good as Mike Williams (Clemson), we might just be seeing the size of the receiver being neutralized and replaced by technique, route running, and agility.

I still like Treadwell and Mike Williams by the way.

I like this take. And when the pendulum swings the other way of smaller quick CBs to cover the good route runners, size-speed freaks will be the more successful flavor of WR. But for now, I agree, the WRs to own are the AB/OBJ type.

I think only time will tell whether he will amount to sutton or nothing. 8-)
