Re: The Todd Gurley Thread - Signed with Falcons
He’s definitely not going to look good when the offense looks this bad. He’s like most bigger RBs in the league- he’ll look good when the offense is humming. He’ll look bad when it isn’t. The concern for me is how little he’s involved in the passing game.FantasyFreak wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 7:30 pmHe looks so slow. It's sad. He's a shell of his former self. Agreed, i thought he would be catching a lot more passes with AtlOhCruelestRanter wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 7:33 pmHe’s definitely not going to look good when the offense looks this bad. Pretty obviously TD dependent at this point..

Yes he looks like a completely replacement level bigger RB. This is probably his last year with some value, I'd sell wherever I could.OhCruelestRanter wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 7:33 pmHe’s definitely not going to look good when the offense looks this bad. Re: The Todd Gurley Thread - Signed with Falcons
I mean he's probably done but I do wonder how great he ever was in the first place. Those Rams' lines that he had those big seasons behind were graded as the best run blocking lines in NFL history. Yes not just the best in the league, the best in HISTORY.
Bigger RBs will always be heavily dependent on line play. They look fast when they're up to speed through a big hole and slow as molasses when they have to juke around in the backfield. See Derrick Henry who looked very blah when the Titans' O-line was bad and all-world when it's great. If he were running behind a stuffed line where he had to juke around a bunch and couldn't get up to speed he would look slow as well imo.

I'm sure it helped him put up the insane elite tier numbers but he looked like a totally different player. Pretty sure he would've been good regardless. The juice is just gone now.Vcize wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2020 7:59 amI mean he's probably done but I do wonder how great he ever was in the first place. Re: The Todd Gurley Thread - Signed with Falcons
As mentioned above, he was absolutely aided by oline and scheme, but watching him play, you knew this dude was also playing at a rarely high level. He earned my respect playing for the Rams as a life long Hawks fan. That said, unfortunate degeneration in his knees has all but retired him, I wouldnt count on him putting up RB2 level points unless he finds the endzone every game for the rest of his career.

Re: The Todd Gurley Thread - Signed with Falcons
Not directed at anybody in particular, but why does having a great offensive line leading to great rushing seasons even need to be mentioned? Is it not obvious at this point that oline play and scheme (which I include RB volume as part of scheme) are the 2 main reasons for an RB1 season?
I get that the dynasty mantra is "talent over situation", but when it comes to RBs, situation may matter more than talent. Especially on a year to year basis. So are people surprised that a downgrade in offensive line play will most likely lead to less statistical production from a RB?

Right obviously everyone knows the line greatly affects RB performance, but what I'm saying is with these bigger backs the line hugely impacts how good they LOOK.nathanq42 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2020 9:22 am As mentioned above, he was absolutely aided by oline and scheme, but watching him play, you knew this dude was also playing at a rarely high level. These guys look all-wordly and unstoppable when they get a head of steam, and like pure crap when they have to juke around in the backfield and can't get their huge bodies up to speed.
Gurley looked all-world with the Rams, like a totally different player. But on the Rams he constantly found himself with the ball out in space running at full speed tossing little DBs aside. That's exactly the situation that makes a big bulky back look unstoppable. Juking around in the backfield like he's had to do the last two years is going to make him look slow.
Henry is the inverse. Behind a bad line he looked poor. He looked worse than Dion Lewis. But Lewis is a shifty little guy who looks better juking around trying to make something out of nothing than a big guy with less lateral agility and acceleration. But now with a good line Henry is running around like Gurley on those great Rams teams, and he looks unstoppable with a head of steam and a bunch of DBs just bouncing off his massive legs.
Every RB is going to be dependent on their line, but with these bigger guys I think how we perceive them is even more dependent on it. They look amazing when they get a head of steam and can really use their size and strength. They look slow and plodding when they can't.

He's a buy for the right price on competing teams. He has the easiest schedule the rest of the way and it's a fair assumption that they're going to run this horse into the ground. He might not make it past this year so don't pay much.

You're talking about 2018 Dion Lewis? 3.3 yards per carry Dion Lewis? He looked better than Derrick Henry for about 1 or 2 games and that was it.Vcize wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2020 9:46 am

I just think you're restricting it to bigger backs when you shouldn't. Barkley looked awful this season behind that putrid line before he got hurt and he has plenty of juice. Lev Bell leaves the Steelers and looks terrible with the Jets.
When you have a great line and scheme, an average back can look very good, large or small. Dallas and Pitt come to mind in that whoever they give carries to looks the part. Why? A great o line and scheme. Look at what Shanahan is doing in SF. They can pick up some bums off the street and plug them into that offense and suddenly they look like quality backs.

He's a TD dependent rb2. He still can hit the hole hard, has good vision and an elite nose for the endzone. His speed, lateral ability and receiving floor have all but vanished.
