Moving up in the draft, when is the best time to try and move up

Postby Wizard » Thu Jan 16, 2020 9:10 pm

I've read a lot about sitting on your higher drift picks until the draft and that makes sense because owners get overly excited and you maybe able to get a big overpay for your higher pics. But what if your in the opposite position, your wanting to move up in the draft? I would assume you'd want to make the move before draft fever kicks in. If you do your taking a chance that you may pay a lot to move up and something happens in the underwear Olympics or some of the assumed top players get drafted to bad situations. Now your expensive new draft position isn't as great as you thought and you've giving up some good assets to get it.

Take for example this upcoming draft, I have the 1.09 in both a SF league and a standard 1QB league. Everyone seems convinced there are 6 real studs in this year's draft. Should I make my move now? Or wait? The SF really has me thinking I need to move up since I expect 2 QBs to go plus the 6 studs making me miss out by one pick. So again, when would the best time to try and move up be? Now or later? How much should I expect to give up to move a few positions?
QB -Tom Brady, Nick Foles Deshaun Watson

RB - Kenyan Drake, Darrius Guise, Tevin Coleman, Leonard Fournett, Kareem Hunt, Justin Jackson, Jaylen Samuels, Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson Jr., Jordan Wilkins, CJ Anderson, Chris Warren,

WR - Davante Adams , T.Y. Hilton, Courtland Sutton, Devin Funchess, Doug Baldwin, Michael Crabtree, Antonio Callaway, J’Mon Moore, Dylan Cantrell, Keith Kirkwood, James Richie

TE - Zach Ertz, Harris Demetrius, Hayden Hurst

Now is better time to move up but there is absolutely no way those tiers will be the same come rookie draft time.

early as possible tbh, i mean you can worry about the uncertainty of these prospects, but in a class like 2020 there is so much talent, even if jeudy or lamb, or swift or taylor, or tua or burrows, go into a bad situation/something happens. the odds of it happening to all of them is pretty much 0. Anyone in their right minds wants to get in on this draft. the longer you wait the more expensive they get.

bottom line, dont wait because of the uncertainty...at least not with a class this deep. pull the trigger as soon as you can.

Hahaha this. Although, during the draft can also be a good time to move up in the later rounds if a guy you like falls... I've used that strategy a bit. I haven't had any success moving up into the early rounds. Everyone is conviced they are getting a surefire stud. Usually not worth it

only big trades i make now are for draft picks. everytime i trade for a player i get screwed over, but idk what it is everytime i trade up for an early pick i always end up hitting on it. maybe im just a genius idk haha

Yeah to be completely honest at this point you should be buying 21 1sts not trying to move up in the 2020 1st round- it’s just too difficult.
Dynasty Team 1:

10 Man, Full PPR, .2 PPC, Double Flex

QB: Kyler Murray
RB: Saquon Barkley , Breece Hall, Swift, Dobbins, Gibson, CEH
WR: Devante Adams, Tyreek Hill, Jamarr Chase, DK Metcalf, Devonta Smith, Jerry Jeudy
TE: Travis Kelce

2023 Picks: 1.4, 1.8, 2.9, 3.2, 3.6, 3.8

Dynasty Team 2:

10 Man, Half PPR, Double Flex

QB: Tua
RB: Barkley , Mixon, Javonte, Jacobs, CEH
WR: AJB, Tyreek, Lamb, Aiyuk, Bateman
TE: Kittle

2022 Picks: 1.5, 1.6, 2.3
2023 Picks: 2 x 1st, 2 x 2nd

The answer was before Etienne declared he was returning. Those top picks just got more valuable because the top tier talent is now more scarce.
Team 1-
SF .5 PPR TE Prem (1Q, 1SF, 2R, 2W, 1T, 3WRT)
QB- Richardson, Dak, Watson, Bennett, Zappe
RB- Achane, Mixon, Ekeler, Javonte Williams, Mostert, Dobbins, Gibson, Bigsby, Spears, Gainwell
WR- Chase, Lamb, London, Pittman, QJ, Bateman, MT, OBJ, Skyy
TE- Freiermuth, Kincaid, Chig, Fant, Musgrave, Woods, Bellinger
1.07, 3.04, 4.07

Team 2-
.5 PPR TE Prem (1Q, 2 R, 3W, 1 T, 3 WRT)
QB: J. Allen, Kyler, Stroud
RB: CMC, Bijan, Gibbs, JT, Breece Hall, Kamara, Gibson, 4nette
WR: Diggs, Hill, AJB, Aiyuk, London, JSN, Hollywood, M.Mims, Meyers, Shaheed
TE: Kelce, Kyle Pitts, Dulcich, Logan Thomas
2024: 2 1st (one top 3), 4th

Team 3- (Adopted Dumpster Orphan)
.5 PPR TE Prem (1Q, 2 R, 3W, 1 T, 3 WRT)
QB: J. Allen, Dak, Young
RB: Gibbs, Hall, J. Cook, Warren, Bigsby, K. Mitchell, Dobbins, D. Cook,
WR: Lamb, Wilson, Olave, Higgins, London, JSN, Bateman, Wan'Dale, Z. Jones, Hyatt
TE: Kittle, Kincaid, Woods, Likely
2024: 2 1st (one top 2), 3rd, 4th

This is my strategy. I’m in a contract league so I’ll be looking to trade some studs on the last year of their contracts because I have depth to get 2020 2nd/3rds and 2021 1sts. I feel like the 2021 will be an afterthought at this point and allow me to obtain them easier.
12 team IDP Salary Cap w/ contracts 40 man roster + 20 taxi spots | 4 year max contract w/ Franchise(1)/Transition(2)/RFA Tags). Mostly mirrors real NFL.
