Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
So do most of you keep your later picks or trade them away? Last year I had only a 1st, 2nd and a 5th. I ended up (thanks to the advice on this board) taking a shot with Preston Williams with my 5th so that may turn out to be a big win but what I gather is that is very very rare, your lucky if a 3rd round pick is an average usable asset.
My question is, do you usually keep your 3rd thru 5th round picks or are you always trading them away? Where's your cutoff for keeping a draft pick (2.10, 3.06.....). As for the answering the question I'm asking what you on average, I know each year is going to be a little different so for example you might want to keep your later draft picks in a really good draft, but what do you do most years with these?

Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
This often comes down to GM style - do you like dart throws? I do, so I tend to keep and use them. Sometimes, I trade for even more late round picks. But remember, dart throws are just that - you miss A LOT.
Now there's one GM in our league who historically always trades his 3rds and 4ths. And his team is just as good as mine right now, so to each their own.

Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
I think it is very league and team dependent. If your league has 2.5 positions (wr, rb, and kinda te) that matter then all of those guys that are likely usable assets will be gone quickly. It they make TEs fully valuable through te premiums then it is a couple more guys, superflex adds more, deep idp settings with scoring that values those positions takes it further, separating out DTs and CBs and to further make each position hold some value goes even a little further. If there are 8 positions that hold pretty solid value plus CBs that aren't entirely worthless then there will be likely viable starters available several rounds in.

Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
Depends on how many roster spaces I have and the roster limitations.
My competitive teams usually only have space for a couple rookies. Rebuilds - I take a ton of dart throws.
I don't like not having a lot of churnable roster spaces though, so I usually end up with a lot of picks.

Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.

Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
I like to use later picks to move up a little bit in rounds 1 and 2. Take your late 2nd + a player + a 3rd and move up to an early 2nd kinda deal.

Use 4-5 for upgrades or add-ons, main league is 10 team idp, so good value in the third can be found

Nearly half of my yearly trades happen during the rookie draft. I like to acquire as much ammunition as I possibly can.

Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
The poll results really surprised me so far, I've read so many comments on this board that made it sound like picks were really not worth all that much. I expected the 'use it as trade bait' to blow away 'keep and use it'.

For me, I've had bad luck in the 1st Rd. Or maybe it's not bad luck and it's just my decision making but I've grabbed John Ross, Rashaad Penny, Miles Sanders with my 1st pick over the past three years. With my 2nd 3rd or 4th picks I've grabbed guys like George Kittle, Michael Gallup, Tre'Qaun Smith, and Terry McLaurin. Those guys have been semi productive productive (Gallup/Smith), enough so I could trade them in package deals to aquire more established players.

Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
It all depends on what you can get for those picks.
If there are guys who have high risk, but medium-to-high upside (coming off major injuries, character issues, etc) and they are around, I would probably rather throw a dart at one of those guys than whatever player I could get with those picks.
Either way - the odds of getting a player of value, whether drafting or trading for a player with one of those picks is low.
I'm actually more likely to keep those late picks than my early picks.

Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
I often use them to move up in the earlier rounds, but that hasn't always paid off for me. Kinda depends on how your league values them. They're likely worth more during the lead up to the draft where you can package them for vets who aren't sexy names but will really fill out a roster well (think Golden Tate, etc) which might be the best option, but you can't really go wrong either way. There are some gems in the late rounds but it's anybody's guess who they are.

I think Miles Sanders is going to live up to a first round pick big time! That was a good use of a first round pick.DynastyDabbler wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2019 8:53 am For me, I've had bad luck in the 1st Rd. Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
I use those picks to sweeten a deal i possibly can or try and get anything worth value out of them for a commodity now. There worth nothing. Your probably not going to draft the one guy in the 3rd round (Mclaurin this year) that becomes fantasy relevant and those 4th and 5th rounders 6th,7th rounders and undrafted guys.

Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
Very interesting, yet not surprising, divergence on how owners have voted so far - as expected different people value later picks differently.
Please speak to clarion contrarion before considering the use of vetos..
Re: Save or trade 3rd thru 5th round picks?
Really depends on what my team looks like. If I'm a contender - I trade the 3rds away for aging talent or I throw it in with a deal to get a proven aging guy (Tate, Edelman, LFitz type of guys).
I almost always save my 4th round pick as I always end up just redrafting Mohammad Sanu at that pick every rookie/FA draft.. Although next year he might not be worth just a 4th..
5th's I usually just trade away immediately in my format of drafts. Usually just trade it to a guy that needs an IDP and has a next years 5th (or 4th if I can squeeze it)
If I draft in those picks, If there isn't anybody I am high on (Mclaurin and Diontae Johnson this year) I usually draft the guy in the best situation available and just hope for the best on the dart throw.
