Rookie receivers, when should I be concerned

Postby Wizard » Sat Oct 19, 2019 1:46 pm

I'm pretty new to dynasty football and didn't expect my recently drafted rookie WRs (Andy Isabella, J. Arcega-Whiteside and Jalen Hurd) to be usable for the first year when I drafted them. I've read many threads about WRs taking a while to develop and hope for a breakout in years 2 or 3 so I'm cool with letting them ride the pine for the season. But at this point I'm starting to get concerned! They haven't really done ANYTHING this season, its like they aren't playing at all (I guess they aren't). Hurd is injured and out for the season so it's understandable for him but the other two; Isabella has not caught a pass yet, not one! Whiteside is a stud compared to Isabella and has a whooping 2 receptions for 14 yards for the whole season. I understood rookie WRs take time to develop but is this normal? How do they get better if they aren't involved at all in the games. :wall:
QB -Tom Brady, Nick Foles Deshaun Watson

I wouldn't be too worried yet. It's not ideal, but look at DJ Chark's rookie year.

Year 3/4 if they aren't showing signs of improvement.

I would be worried about JJAW because he sucks. The other two have plenty of time to show how good they are

OP - don’t worry. You said yourself in your original post that it takes two or three years til rookies break out. Relax.

I remember back in Davante Adams' second year when everybody was writing him off as a major bust. Patience is the biggest asset for dynasty success. You might just have to wait a little longer than 6 weeks. R-E-L-A-X

I wouldnt be worried. Isabella is a small school guy who was going to take some time and JJAW was always thought to be a replacement for Jeffrey who wouldnt do anything until hes gone.

Plus some WRs take time even in great situations

So its not unusual then. I just assumed they would have maybe a catch a game or so. I'll refrain from panicking, for now. This bring up another question, what rookie WRs that have not been doing much should be targeted for a trade from panicking or almost panicking owners like me. LOL. Ill start another thread for that.

If you're asking in general:

If a rookie WR has multiple season ending injuries early in his career - that can be a cause for concern because that really de-rails their development, and may shake their confidence & or cause them to "lose something". See guys like Kevin White or Breshad Perriman.

Or if a WR has reports of not working - ie not studying or putting in the effort - or just not getting the playbook or able to learn to run routes. Then odds increase they'll lose their jobs and/or not even stick on a roster. See guys like Dorial Green-Beckham or Cordarelle Patterson.

Or a combination of both (ie a combination of injuries &/or work habbit concerns) may do enough to keep them from ever fully becoming what you expected like Devante Parker or Marqise Lee.

Basically if there are plenty of health, development and/ or off-field concerns then perhaps worry. Otherwise sometimes it is just best to wait & see how it plays out.

RB is the position that tends to have a more immediate result. The 2014 draft class of WR's put a bit of a spell on expectations of WR's, and the new rules have since allowed an easier transition. However, it is typically schemes, and route running that are at a much more complex level in the NFL to most college programs that make it a more difficult transition to the NFL. Blocking as well. It's a different game, and it takes a lot of time for some, depending on team fit and their college scheme.

Yeah, I get that it takes time for WR to develop but I expected more than no catches and 2 catches in 6 weeks. Hopefully things start picking up for them.

The thing is half the rookies usually bust. Everyone loves picks but reality is most guys just don't pan out. That's why trading a stud for some random picks is usually not smart.
A lot of it is just luck.
