O.J. Howard Thread

Postby Cherokee » Sat Jan 28, 2017 9:07 pm

Shouldnt we consider O.J. Howard at 1.05? Lots of questions with players at this point. For me, it all depends on Mixon and if he is drafted with his first round grade accordingly. Howard seems to be the next diffenece maker at the TE position with few/no question marks. Engram is similar and should be considered above guys like Foreman, CMac, Kamara, Ross, Samuel and for sure JuJu and Perine.

I hope all my league mates take the TEs in the mid-late 1st!

I hear what you're saying, and yes he's safer as a prospect at his position than probably any of the WRs after the top 2, and maybe the same goes for RB prospects.

However, the ceiling simply will not be there, most likely, from a historical perspective. TEs are almost never weekly difference makers, not in the way a stud RB or WR can be.

And that doesn't even account for the well-worn, but accurate assessment that most TEs aren't startable in fantasy for 2-3 years.

I see what your saying as well. Its just not always about ceiling. And how many stud running backs do you see after Cook/Mixon? I love Williams, Hunt, Hill, Karmara and to a lesser degree McQuire but do they have the career ceiling as a Horwad, Engram or Butt? Thats where Im at

I have the 1.04 and 1.07. If Mixon is gone, I'm definitely considering Howard. Granted I play in a TE premium league (.5 PPR for TE, everything else is non-PPR). But I think it is still something very much worth considering depending on landing spots.

I think all my leaguemates should consider Howard at 1.05

Maybe I'll see more CBs go in the first round this year, too.

I dont see how is is as "out there" as you're making it. Give me your 1st round picks from 2013 to 2016. Or at least last year. CBs? Come on dont just try to be funny, who do you have that is so much better than Mixon or Howard at 1.05 as a long term prospect?

1.05 is possible if he lands in an awesome situation.

Tenn, NYG, TB, Oak, Dal and Arizona all seem like interesting spots.

Tampa would be incredible. Wintson relies on the TE, always has.

Think about Ebron. Super high end TE prospect. Developed really nicely as a pro. Still not a weekly difference maker at his position tho.

True and I see bith sides of it. I really do. I also recall Sankey and Marqise Lee taken ahead of Kelce,
And a number of RBs and WRs last year taken ahead of Hunter Henry. I hear ya though, man. I just cant get behind CMac, JuJu, Ross or these other guys mid to late 1st. Its not like Im saying take Howard at 1.02. I dont even own a pick around here. In 2 leagues, 1 I have 1.02 1.03 1.11 and 1.12 the other I have 1.11. I'll be real happy if I get my TE at 1.11 in both leagues. I just dont see the point of taking a shot in the middle of the 1st. Trade the pick or go Howard is what Im preaching. Happy Chinese New Year's!

At this point in the process, there isn't one specific WR or TE that I have FOR SURE ahead of the best TE. Foreman, CM, Mixon, Ross, JuJu, & Gallman are all in the mix pending landing spot

1) kelce was not in sankey and lee draft class so you probably shouldn't remember them going ahead of him.
2) I see what you are saying but this class is different. Right now we have three guys that will almost 100% be GRADED higher and drafted higher than sankey draft position in mccaffrey foreman and kamara. Also Ross will be graded higher and nearly certainly he a top 25 pick over lee.

So while I agree Howard is good and certainly in the first round mix, we really aren't giving enough credit to these middle round guys for some reason. This is the best 5-8 we have had in forever.
TEAM 1: 12 man PPR (.25 passing and rushing attempt) dynasty league

RB: Saquon Barkley, Jonathan Taylor, JK Dobbins, Najee Harris, Joe Mixon, Deandre Swift
WR: Tyreek Hill, Justin Jefferson, Deandre Hopkins, Chris Godwin, Jamaar Chase, Allen Robinson, Rashod Bateman
TE: Kyle Pitts, Hunter Henry

TEAM 2: 10 MAN Superflex. (standard PPR).
QB: Mahomes, Wilson, Stafford, Wentz, Jimmy G
RB: Mccaffrey, Zeke, Javonte, Akers, Jacobs, Edmonds, Henderson, Fournette, Pollard
WR: Adams, Michael Thomas, Keenan Allen, Aiyuk, Odell Beckham, Devonta Smith Julio,Shenault
TE: Travis Kelce, George Kittle

TEAM 3:10 MAN PPR (2 QUARTERBACK LEAGUE took over orphan 2016) Dynasty League
QB: Dak, Lamar, Tua, Winston, Bridgewater,
RB: Mccaffrey, Henry, Aaron Jones, Chubb, Mike Davis
WR: Aj Brown, Terry Mclaurin, Theilen, Godwin, Juedy, Sutton, Watkins, Davis, Crowder
TE: Waller, Engram, Geodtert

I really like howard as a prospect (not groundbreaking of course) and I will say if your team is not close to contending them by all means take BPA . BPA is nearly always the way to go same as in real life , however just understand if you take a TE that early; patience will be the key . Howard looks pro ready but generally TE take time to find their NFL legs and be a weekly starter. For my $ i would trade out or pick whomever you think is likely to help you more rapidly. In skip's always trade your picks thread a few people have pointed out how often times players increase in value after their rookie year . You could perhaps trade the player you pick at 1:5 after the 1st season for howard plus and let someone else eat the new car depreciation on a TE and miss the 1st season growing pains .
I think in a hypothetical situation where you have 1:5 - 2:5 with the 2017 class I take ross ,mixon ,kamara or mccaffery the one you like best and then grab a TE in round 2 , engram is 19th in DLF ADP as of today . I would rather have say mccaffery and engram than howard who is currently 12th in adp and curtis samuel (17th) at 5th and 17th.
All are situation dependent like virtually every prospect but giving away 7 spots of adp generally is not the best strategy to build the deepest strongest roster . ADP is over rated as a tool as I have railed in other threads as I do not wish to be average & i often swim upstream but swimming 7 spots upstream seems ambitious in my opinion.

There is a chance you are just ahead of the curve on howard at 1:5 but there have been some terrific TE prospects that didn't come close to the 1:5 but very few that delivered value quickly at that cost. kelce was 5th TE drafted that year and through their 4 seasons 6th drafted TE jordan reed drafted 22 picks later has 24 more catches and 4 more tds than kelce . Zach ertz has 23 more balls and 1 less TD , eifert far less catches but 7 more tds than kelce . So while his value Kelce's sky high today the reality diverges from the mass perception. Merely even invoking kelces name is reason to not draft howard at 1:5 as he was drafted much later and has balled out proving that you can find guys later much cheaper than picking a TE at 1:5.

I took Ebron over OBJ that year @ 1.06. I'm never drafting TE that early ever again no matter what.
