Are aging RB Handcuffs worth Rostering?

Postby IBall2 » Thu Aug 15, 2019 7:33 am

Is it worth rostering RBs like Gio Bernard/Frank Gore/Alfred Morris/Doug Martin/etc. who are all on their last year of their contract with their current teams but could see a large workload this year with an injury to the RB1 on their teams?

This is a dilemma I face every year when it comes down to roster cuts before the start of the season. And this year it might be even worse with the supposed great 2020 RB class coming up next year.

Would you drop players like those mentioned above for some preseason hyped players like Preston Williams/Chad Beebe/Dontrell Hilliard/Jakobi Meyers, even if you own them as a handcuff to your starting RB?

As others have said, Gio is the only one I would put a priority on. If I could get Alf without sacrificing too much I'd be willing to do that too.

Of the players you mentioned, I'd want Hillard and Williams (probably in that order surprisingly enough).

For those of you saying Gio is worth stashing, would you keep him over Trayveon Williams or Rodney Anderson?

To me, that situation seems similar to the LA Rams situation. But I don't know of anybody that would keep Malcolm Brown over Darrel Henderson. Just a season ago, people were talking about Rodney Anderson being a top 10 rookie dynasty pick before his injury.

I agree with a couple of the above posts that Gio is basically a must-roster RB. He's bound to have 2-3 high-RB2 weeks when Mixon gets hurt.

I have no problem dropping those other guys (in a shallow-ish league) to pick up a quick pick-and-flip hype player. I'd definitely prioritize Williams over Alf, Martin, and Gore.

There's a pretty big difference between Henderson and Anderson in terms of draft capital and perceived role and path to future production. Also Gio is on an expiring contract and could gain a lot of value in the offseason. Plus he's proven valuable as an injury stand in.

As an aside, I do think Brown is still the RB2 in LA for the time being.

I would only roster them if they were the obvious direct backup to a starter that I also owned.

Otherwise I want nothing to do with them. Just a waste of a spot imo.
