Duke Johnson traded to Texans. That answers the backup RB question.
Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.

Not so fast.

I don't think Duke is an every down back. If Miller gets hurt, I still think someone else gets at least half of those carries, if not more.

I disagree enough to use the bonus off-season roster spot elsewhere (hello Dontrelle Hilliard!).
Duke has seemed plenty capable of carrying a load going back to college. He'd be my bet to be the starter by midseason, with Miller as the backup.

Exactly this. What does Hilliard go for tonight when waivers process? Ours is pretty bare and have an 8% claim right now.

What would Darwin Thompson or Ito Smith go for? Hilliard should probably be valued similarly.

He's a COP back. Definitely not what would call a "lead back". I still wouldn't pay a 2nd, at least not a 2020. He's kind of in a range where I think owners would want more than I'm willing to pay. I'd say a 2nd is probably the asking price, and I would rather not.

Yeah I'm going to have to go ahead and... disagree with you there.
I think he's more likely to be successful as a lead back than Miller. He's a better inside runner and a better receiver, and he looked much better carrying the load at Miami than Miller did.

That's said, it's not the time to buy. UNLESS your are getting him for a 2nd, which I don't see any owner doing.

Nearly 100% of the argument that Duke isn't lead-back capable ultimately depends on "because the Browns didn't use him that way."

The Browns. Under Hue Jackson.

For a variety of reasons, that shouldn't be a persuasive argument.

Facts are Duke Johnson has been a very effective every-area rusher in the NFL with what carries he has been granted, and ofc as a Miami Hurricane he was a workhorse his final two seasons with them (after being a change-up guy as a freshman), averaging 6.7 ypc on 526 collegiate career carries (the YPC also tied for the highest seasonal mark of his time there in the season he got his largest workload). He had one significant injury in college, in 2013, a fractured ankle. Beyond that, he's been active for every NFL game of his career.

The other half of the argument is that O'Brien won't use him that way. That's my bet. I think it's fair to assume Miller maintains a decent role in this offense, and if he isn't there next year, that they draft a back to replace the need it will create.
