ASJ to the Patriots

Postby Jetsfan06 » Wed Apr 10, 2019 11:09 am

The ex jaguars TE signed a 1 year deal with the Patriots per Adam Schefter.

I was gonna cut him no problem before my rookie draft, but this is now a suddenly interesting development given the fact that gronk retired. That’s quite the vacancy. I believe Dwayne Allen went to Miami as well.

Now they could easily draft a TE, this is a loaded class. But it seems like ASJ suddenly has value again, especially if they don’t draft any TEs in the first few rounds. Thoughts?

I think he has potentially some value for 1 year. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats grab multiple tes in this class.
Certainly worth keeping him or trading him.

This is easily the greatest thing to happen to his value since being drafted.

Eh...
No one aside from Gronk (and Hernandez) have been great there.
I remember grabbing Sudfeld in the preseason and being excited about him. Ended up selling him for a 2nd rounder I think. Martellus Bennett was better than ASJ but did little in NE. Dwayne Allen was supposed to be suddenly a great asset when he went to NE.

Gronk was special. It hasn't held up to just plug another tight end in there and Brady makes them great. He doesn't/hasn't.

I suppose what this DOES do...is gives you an indication that the Patriots won't be going tight end early in the draft.

I wouldn’t say that at all. This is as a clear sell opportunity as it gets. I won’t be surprised if the Pats go TE early and then cut ties with ASJ before the season starts.

Surprised at all the "meh" responses. NE doesn't really have any big red-zone receivers, and they'll likely need to throw more in 2019 with the defense not as strong (at least on paper). I'll be buying for a mid 2nd or cheaper.

I doubt they go TE now, i think they ride this out for a year and draft a WR in the first. Wr is more of a clear need now.

And I would gladly SELL for a mid 2nd... well before the draft that is. If we come out of the draft with no big TE names drafted by the patriots, then I would have to consider just holding onto him.

Just snagged him in my league off the waiver wire. Dropped Boston Scott. Worth a roster spot I suppose given my dumpster fire situation at TE.
"Marathon Square" - 16 team full PPR league with 24 player roster. Keep 16 per year indefinitely, draft 8. Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Team DST
QB: Jordan Love, Deshaun Watson
RB: Travis Etienne, Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, Kendre Miller, Jaleel McLaughlin, Sean Tucker, Deuce Vaughn
WR: A.J. Brown, Garrett Wilson, Tee Higgins, Calvin Ridley, Michael Wilson, Kendrick Bourne, Tutu Atwell, Allen Lazard, Isaiah Hodgins, Xavier Hutchinson
TE: T.J. Hockenson, Cole Kmet, Kylen Granson
K: Didn't make the playoffs in 2023  , and don't usually hold one in the offseason
Team DST: Cowboys, Lions

Picks:
2024: All my picks except 3rd rounder

Disclaimer: My one and only Championship in this league was way back in 2011. Therefore, take my replies with the appropriate grain of salt.

I think Bennet did okay there when Gronk was out. I think ASJ is closer to Gronk than he is to Dwayne Allen in terms of skill set. I like the opportunity for him.

I'm curious why you think this. The Patriots replaced Flowers with Micheal Bennett, which IMO might be a slight upgrade but is certainly not a huge downgrade. Added one of the best run stuffing DTs in the league (Mike Pennel) resigned all their other FA, will have Juwaun Bentley, Duke Dawson and Christian Sam back from IR plus anyone they draft this year. I mean nothing is set in stone but "on paper" this defense is anything but worse than last years.

Long time ago, and maybe irrelevant. But Ben Coates was pretty solid for a time.

As for ASJ, this certainly pumps his value a bit. But I question if he's got the ability to sustain that value once the pads come on and would view this as a "sell" opportunity if I had another option on my roster at TE.

Wouldn't blame an owner for holding-and-hoping though.
