How much blind bid money for first waivers

Postby SteveMaddensShoes » Tue Jun 04, 2019 9:09 am

We are about to have our first round of waivers since the draft. How much do you spend on free agents by ADP round? I'm looking for a rule of thumb more than asking for specific players but I'll use specific players for example.

Keesean Johnson might have an adp around 30 in rookie drafts but went undrafted in our rookie draft. It could be him, could be anyone you like. If a guy has a rookie ADP in the 3rd round and you like him, how much do you spend on him in blind bids?

A 3rd round rookie adp = 20% of your budget? More? Less?

I'm not sure how much to spend or what strategy to use in the first round of waivers and looking for some theory advice on the subject.

I think every league is different. We have $500 for the year. Last week 1 guy spent $300, and another spent $100. I got Alex Barnes for $1. I do feel your frustration though. I never know how much to bid.

If I had to put a % on it, I would say something like 5-10% for 3rd round rookie. We have $300 budgets in most of my leagues and I would probably put in a bid of anywhere between $20 or so for a player like that. It’s just so hard to say because ever league is different.

I typically spend all my FA budget in the first wave of blind bidding after a draft, kind of feel its an extension of the draft .. I usually will go with one player I really like over 50% of it, then distribute the rest on degree of interest ... Sometimes they hit, sometimes they miss, I spent most of my budget on Akrum Wadley last year (bust), but also spent a significant amount on Phillip Lindsay (hit) .. but yeah, I tend to try to acquire 2 or 3 guys I want on my roster, and if I have room ...

But of course I read all OTA and training camp reports every morning, and listen to a podcast or two for every team ... I tend to go on steady news coming out of camp, paying attention to instances where a rookie/UDFA are getting 1st or 2nd team reps .. etc...

The deeper the league, the more you should spend on the first wave.
16 team league
1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 Flex (RB/WR/TE)
26 upman rosters - full point ppr
2015, 17, 18, 19, 20 Champs

QB: Watson, Flacco Stidham
RB: Bijan, Gibbs, McLaughlin
WR: Olave, Addison, Flowers, Rice, Sutton, Downs, Mims, Tillman
TE: Kittle, Goedert, Chig, Woods
24 Picks: 1.06

First round of waivers in one of my leagues showed that FA acquisitions could be had for cheap. I picked up Demarcus Robinson for $7. In another league Robinson went for $21. Just depends on the league, as the commenters above mentioned.

RB: Harris, Gibson, Chubb, Cohen
WR: DK, Ridley, Kirk, Chark, Woods, C Samuel, Shepard, Reagor
TE: Fant, Knox
Team 2: 14-team PPR SF TEP:

RB: Mixon, Gibson, Hines, Cohen, Pollard
WR: DJM, Cooper, Sutton, Deebo, R. Moore, ARSB, Eskridge, Renfrow
TE: Gesicki, Njoku, Arnold
Team 3: 12-team PPR SF:
QB: Watson, Lawrence, Winston, Cam
RB: Harris, Ekeler, Dobbins
WR: Hill, AJB, Woods, Chark, Lockett
TE: Gesicki, OJH, Firkser
Team 4: 12-team SF TEP Devy
QB: Wilson, Geno, Ryan, Cousins
