But finally a WR needy team (took too many rookies in start up draft) came to me and offered a 2020 1st. He wanted to keep his 2019 to try to improve his team and felt he'd be great after the 2019 draft for several years. Now he's got a questionable Gurley, and possibly finished Hill, a Mahomes with no place to go but down, another RB in Michel with questionable knees and a possible RBBC situation and 1.10 and no 2020 1st. He is sitting on Kirk and C. Davis and Tre Smith as well as Guice so he's def not dead in water but he's panicking a bit now as he's got minimal depth. So I'm thinking my 2020 1st of his may end up mid at worst despite him thinking it'd be a late throwaway. Time will tell.
Kinda funny because the player I am talking about is Sanders as well. I have another owner (big Broncos fan) hounding me for him. He doesn't have any 1st nor 2nd's for this year or next, so he is offering me his 2021 2nd round pick. I like Sanders, but he is also 32 and coming off a major injury. I really felt like 2021 is so far away and wasn't sure about trading this far out, hence why I was curious as to other people's thoughts on it.
I think either hold and hope he rebounds from his Achilles injury and hope for a 2021 1st, or sell now for 2021 2nd. The risk is you hold and he becomes total worthless. I'd probably sell but I'm def a "bird in the hand" person.

Most of my leagues only allow a max of two years ahead, but if I had a player that I really wanted to sell, I'd happily take a 2021 pick.
E. Sanders for 2021 2nd is what the actual offer is.

I snap accept that.

I don't take far away futures in every deal, but they are as good as anything when you are trying to clear roster clogging players and "restart the clock" on an asset.

This. I love doing it with competitive teams who are buyers as well. That team could always flip in 2 years and all of a sudden you have a really good pick.

Best way to do this is if your team is REALLY good and you are getting rid of expendable assets. Or if you are getting a really good value for a rebuild.

I don't like trading for picks far out if my team is middle of the road or if it's only fair value in a rebuild because that guarantees a prolonged rebuild
This.

I just recently sold Gurley for essentially David Johnson + 2021 1st round pick. That pick belongs to a team that just made a playoff push last year, but is relying on a questionable core in my opinion (Kamara / Carson / Gurley / Alshon / Tate / no other WRs). I think there's a great chance that 2021 1st ends up being top4, and should only appreciate in value over the next 18 months.

Target "win-now" teams that are looking to get over the hump. Those are typically the teams that experience a downturn in the next few years. Worst case scenario you still get a future pick. Best case scenario is you land the next Barkley / Gurley / Zeke with that pick).

Here's where you can really get an advantage. If you're simply stock-piling assets, then a 2021 2nd is similar to a 2020 2nd. You can note, truthfully, that nearer picks are more valuable. Simply ask for a 2020 or 2021 4th to be included. You'll be shocked (in a good way!!) how getting a couple or a few extra of those picks in deals like this set you up later to add them in as proverbial cherries in a big package for a player or pick that you really want.

So, yeah, keep stockpiling those future picks!!

Why would you not want a pick? The fact that it’s 2 years out lessens the value, sure, but it still has value. Picks are the only assets in dynasty that are liquid. Hoard them whenever you get the chance, and use them as currency.

I think it depends on your situation

As others mentioned, I don't think those future picks do much for you if you're selling your assets & are a middle of the road team.

In all of my startups this year, my strategy was to sell my soul via 2020 picks to build a Year 1 contender (while grabbing some young talent)
I think I was successful in doing so and now throughout the year, I'll try to sell high on some bench players to acquire future picks and reload in 2021

(I haven't decided yet whether this strategy will come back to bite me in the bleep)
Team 1:
12-team | PPR | SuperFlex | 0.5-TEP
Start: 1QB/2RB/2WR/1TE/3FLX/1SF

WR: Chase, Diggs, Olave, Aiyuk, Hollywood, MT, Shaheed

Team 2:
12-Team | PPR | SuperFlex | 0.5-TEP
(Start: QB/2RB/2WR/1TE/3FLX/1SF)
QB: Mahomes, Allen, Russ
RB: Breece, JT, Swift, Javonte, Mostert
WR: Chase, Kupp, Aiyuk, Nico, Hollywood, Kirk, MT
TE: Pitts, Njoku, Woods
'24 picks: none

Team 3:

QB: Hurts, Dak, Stafford, Z.Wilson, DTR
RB: Saquon, Swift, Achane, Kamara, Ford
WR: Jefferson, AJB, ARSB, Nico, Diontae, OBJ

'24 picks: 4th, 4th

Hate the rule of trading picks 2 or more years out.
Never thought it was good for stability of fantasy leagues.

The further away the draft pick, the more important the role of patience becomes. IE no point imo in buying a 1st round pick from 2021 or 2022 if you then turn around and sell it for 1/2 its value.
Please speak to clarion contrarion before considering the use of vetos..

I can somewhat agree with that. I wouldn't continually ask for those picks over the current year/ next year. But what is your opinion on trading older veterans though if the best offer you receive is a pick 2+ years away?

I've been shopping Emmanuel Sanders for a while and the best offer I have gotten is a 2021 2nd. The guy with that pick is a huge Broncos fan, but doesn't have any 2nd round picks for 2019 or 2020. In Sanders case, he is 32 (I believe) and coming of an injury that is difficult to come back from. I have a team that on paper should be a top 3 team this year, so at best Sanders would be #4 for me (and that is if he comes back from injury and does anything). In your opinion, is it better to go ahead and make that trade knowing that I shouldn't need him, or keep him for depth and hopes that he does something, and then try to sell him for a 20 pick?

I have three first round picks in the 2021 draft after some maneuvering. I want to be in a decent position if Trevor Lawrence declares. Rodgers should be hitting that wall around then and Trubisky should be hitting his stride...

A 2021 2nd for Sanders seems like a no brainer.

This looks like Sanders last year to be useful and my guess is that its nothing more than a bye week fill in.

Of course you can/should take it.....manny is certainly worth something even if noone wants to give you anything. Im not joking when i tell you that there are guys who carry decent value on a/my roster but noone will even give me a 3rd or 4th rd pick. Kinda ridiculous that i may have to drop these guys and leaguemates will bitch...but i have to do whats best for my team.

Trading picks that far out can really impact a team though. Lets say that pick ends up 2.1 and sanders really doesnt do a think in the nfl from here on out.....he wasnt worth the investment for your partner and not only did manny fizzle, that owner is missing picks for 19, 20, 21....you can see the impact.

I remember trading calvin for future picks thinking he would be around a few more years. I got 1 season out of him and my trade partner ended up with something like mixon and chubb.... With the picks i gave. Ive also made similar trades and still benefitting from guys like julio and ajg and have caught back up on current picks. It works both ways is all im saying.

I think ice was pointing to something like this when mentioning league stability. Is it fair that ive been riding julio by giving 16 & 17 1st back in 2015? Am i likely to bail or become disgruntled when i traded for calvin and watch it blow up in my face and have no draft capital to improve my team? Just things to think about before moving picks or allowing picks to me moved multi yrs out.

I dont think there's a right way to have it, but having multi yrs is certainly much different than 1yr out.

On the last line in this quote, in 2017 I sold Demarco Murray and a 2019 3rd for...........a 2019 1st. Best offer I could get, and took a LOT of negotiating.

It turned into 1.1 in a 14 team superflex.

Future picks will ALWAYS go up in value. Patience is the key. This is dynasty. I don't agree with allowing draft pick trading for 3 or more years out, but I like two years out. Those picks are some of the cheapest assets you can acquire and they WILL go up a lot in value if you hold onto them, and sometimes you get lucky on top of it.

Yea you are right about him simply being a bye week fill in. We play 2 WRs, 2 RBs, and 2 FLEX, so every week Barkley, Kamara, Mixon, M Thomas, and OBJ will be in my lineup, with Cooper or Aaron Jones rounding out my other FLEX (barring injury of course).

I guess I’m a Sanders homer though, so it is tough to get rid of him.
