Which Rookies are Likely to Return Kicks?

Postby briank » Mon May 20, 2019 8:50 am

I'm wondering if there are some rookies with special teams prowess that might break a tie for leagues with return yards.

Deebo Samuel is the biggest standout to me.

Mecole Hardman was called "the closest thing to Devin Hester" that the Chiefs return coach had seen. Not because of this but because of a LOT of things... I think Hardman moves up the rookie rankings significantly by the end of the year.

You can go to 3:50 here if you want to skip this Youtube video creator commentary and get straight to the Chiefs brass discussing Hardman at length.

Not sure why you are quoting my post about Deebo and bringing up Hardman; or if you are meant to respond to the OP.

However, in college - Deebo was by far the better return man.
Deebo had 44 returns, 4 of them went for touchdowns.
Hardman had 74 returns, 1 of them went for a touchdown.

I'm sure Hardman will be a candidate to return kicks for the Chiefs - but right now it is hard to see him doing much outside of that. Deebo not only is likely to return kicks, but figures to be heavily involved in the offense.

I quoted you because you said Deebo was the biggest standout. So I put up what the Chiefs brass had to say. Being "closest to Hester" would qualify as the biggest standout to me. Just showing info.

But because you decided to start putting up stats, you are combining punt and kick returns as though they are the same, as well as only caring about TDs as if that is 100% predictable.

Their kickoff returns are roughly similar.

Deebo has only 2 punt returns for a total of 8 yards. Clearly not something they had faith in him doing (quantity), he didn't really do anything (4 YPR), but it's also not something you can hold against him with that little usage.

Hardman though, last season - 16 punt returns averaging 20.1 a return! Total career 15.2 YPR.

So both punt and kick returns, he has FAR more chances, equal to Deebo on kickoffs, and FAR more on punts.

Stats, confidence from the coaching staff, I think Hardman has the return title. I'm pretty confident in what they want to do with him on offense as well. As I said, I expect Hardman to climb boards by the end of summer.

I know he's tiny but Greg Dortch could be someone to keep an eye out for in NYJ.

i've seen plenty of coaches saying the guy they traded up for in the draft just a month ago was shite.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but they didn't have to say that. There is (almost?) an entire spectrum between terrible at returns and "closest thing to Hester." Fluffing up like Carroll could easily be pushed off.

they're hyping their guy. i wouldn't read much, if anything, in that.
you said that statement is enough to make him the "biggest standout".
fair enough, i disagree!
