Terry Godwin - A name to draft late (or at least watch closely)
5’11/184 with 4.55 wheels. Nothing special there.
Injuries absolutely undid his senior year, capping him at a wholly pedestrian stat-line.
Statistically, underwhelming career that saw him crescendo as a junior, with just under 40 catches for just under 700 yards. Granted, it’s Georgia, so no reciever was getting gaudy numbers, but still - no analytical model will love Godwin, I’m sure.
SO - why did I just draft him with one of my final picks? Why have I been semi-softly hyping him all spring? Why should you draft him, assuming you’re in a deep league, or at LEAST look to stash him after your draft?
His route running is some of the smoothest in this class. His hands and body control are NASTY. His size & speed, while not exciting, is certainly good enough to win in the NFL (and, watching his college tape against the best of the best, that shows up)
When these late-round WRs slip through the cracks and become studs, are they 6’4 monsters who run 4.5 flat? (Marcell Ateman, for instance)
No, they are small or average-sized, shifty, route-running mavens who USUALLY slipped through the cracks due to injury and/or mediocre opportunity in college.
Cue the obligatory “Now, I’m not predicting that Terry Godwin is the next Stefon Diggs, but...”

Is this your opinion, or are there any people with football scouting backgrounds who are saying this? Genuinely curious.lukkynumber13 wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2019 8:01 pm 5’11/184 with 4.55 wheels. Nothing special there.

Definitely my opinion, but the guys from the Draft Network (my favorite draft analyst group by far) liked him quite a bit as a mid-round target. I do not have specific quotes to reference, I admit.

Nobody at Georgia puts up a ton of yards, it's just the way it is. They spread the ball around and run a ton because they always have killer RB talent.lukkynumber13 wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2019 8:20 pm Definitely my opinion, but the guys from the Draft Network (my favorite draft analyst group by far) liked him quite a bit as a mid-round target. I was prepared to scoff at Diggs being invoked, but after looking it up I think I see now why you did it: like Diggs, Godwin was a super elite high-school prospect that disappointed in college (although moreso than Diggs). https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/ ... odwin-7992
Thanks for the heads up. I've spent the last ten minutes browsing about Godwin, and I agree he's got some deep sleeper indicators.

Re: Terry Godwin - A name to draft late (or at least watch closely)
I picked him up off waivers as well as soon as our rookie draft ended last week
I would also add that in addition to your player analysis (well stated btw) that the depth chart in CAR is pretty wide open @ WR
Obviously DJ Moore is the guy & Samuel will command some targets but after that who's he competing with?
Chris Hogan? Is Torrey Smith still playing? Jarius Wright?

Re: Terry Godwin - A name to draft late (or at least watch closely)
Honestly, imo, the back of every NFL teams depth chart is wide open, not just Carolinas. However guys like Torrey Smith & Chris Hogan might not have much appeal from the fantasy crowd but they, like Ted Ginn, keep their jobs because they perform an NFL role that the team covets. Not saying they cannot be passed on a depth chart - just that these unsexy veterans on all rosters stick around for a reason and it is oftentimes at the expense of the late round WR or UDFA because even if they dont have the "potential" they have the experience and football know how.
Thats why he is a good name to monitor - but if you add him too soon - then all your leaguemates know of your interest, and one of them may add him later if you have to make a late cut at the beginning of the season.

He has not yet been drafted in any of my leagues - but he was added via waivers in one post rookie draft.

Re: Terry Godwin - A name to draft late (or at least watch closely)
Guys like him, you gotta keep track of their snap counts in-season. I have experienced what you say and it's frustrating (Robby Anderson, Cam Meredith). Now I try not picking them up until I see them seeing the field. You just gotta hope that they dont just blow up as soon as they get some snaps, and if they do, you kinda knew to expect that was possible and gotta add a few extra FAAB.

Re: Terry Godwin - A name to draft late (or at least watch closely)
Godwin is sort of interesting as a flyer, but it's wrongly assumed that Diggs disappointed in college. He was really good as a freshman, broke his leg as a sophomore, was on pace to having a great year as a junior (despite injuries and a lacerated kidney). Diggs fell strictly on injuries. Outside of that, he was really, really good and could've been better if he didn't play with a dumpster fire at QB.ninotoreS wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2019 8:56 pm I was prepared to scoff at Diggs being invoked, but after looking it up I think I see now why you did it: like Diggs, Godwin was a super elite high-school prospect that disappointed in college (although moreso than Diggs). https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/ ... odwin-7992
Thanks for the heads up. I've spent the last ten minutes browsing about Godwin, and I agree he's got some deep sleeper indicators.
Godwin just wasn't all that. Georgia's offense doesn't usually do WR's any favors either, but between him Riley Ridley, Jeremiah Holloman and MeCole Hardman, Godwin didn't really stand when his number was called.

Are you trying to reinvent the definition of "disappoint"?Cameron Giles wrote: ↑Thu May 23, 2019 8:33 pmit's wrongly assumed that Diggs disappointed in college
Diggs was absolutely and unquestionably a disappointment at Maryland. He was a 5-star recruit with a whopping 32 scholarship offers. He was expected to be a barnburner. He wasn't. Full stop.
Strictly? No. Stop with this faux-revisionism.Diggs fell strictly on injuries.

Analysts and scouts had several issues with Diggs that had nothing to do with his injuries. Harry Douglas being Zierlein's comp speaks volumes.
But yes, obviously Godwin was a worse 5-star bust. As quoted.

On raw numbers, he wasn't and that's largely because of QB play. On advanced numbers and game tape, he was very, very good. Are you trying to reinvent the definition of "disappoint"?

Bad choice of words by me. His issues were mostly related to injuries. Outside of that Diggs was not much different from the player he is today. He was underrated in some parts as a WR, but durability was a big concern. There's not much draft value in taking a WR that high who had a history of significant (even though they were fluke) injuries. Him working with Keenan McCardell was a big development for his skill and technique as a route runner in college.Strictly? No. Stop with this faux-revisionism, it's worse than that Evans vs Butler thread.
