djeternal2 wrote: Sat Mar 28, 2020 2:23 am BTW if Ruggs is so awesome and talked about as the first WR being taken why was he the third or 4th best WR on his team in regards to production? Waddle outproduced him as a Freshman in 18 vs Ruggs as a Sophomore. Hell Irv Smith nearly matched his production that year as well. A flippin TE! Then yeah fast forward to 2019 and Smith & Jeudy are well ahead of Ruggs. If he's soooo talented why didn't the cream rise to the top? Why was he never the first or second option in the offense? Like I said beat out by a Frosh in 18 (Waddle) and basically equal to a TE (Irv Smith) that same year. The TE was gone in 19 so Ruggs saw a few more targets. Sadly it actually reduced his catches from 46 to 40 and basically even on yardage (741 to 746).
You're answering your own question. Alabama's offensive production is more diluted than any offense we've seen in recent memory.

2017:
Pass Catchers: Calvin Ridley, Jerry Jeudy, Irv Smith, Henry Ruggs, Jaylen Waddle, Devonta Smith
RBs: Damien Harris, Bo Scarborough, Josh Jacobs, Najee Harris

Total Passing Yards: Under 2800

Obviously the wealth of talent continued in 2018 and 2019.

This is why market share, while a useful stat, still needs context. Jalen Reagor, for example played with....? Not saying Reagor isn't good, but it's much easier to have a higher market share when you aren't playing with anyone.

Ruggs' statistical profile in terms of market share and breakout age isn't going to be great. So, you have to look at other factors to determine if he actually has the skill and talent necessary to translate to the NFL. When you really research and explore that, you'll find that he checks a lot of boxes:

- Elite speed
- Saw most of his routes as an outside WR
- Improved route running
- Used on all three levels
- Experience running a diverse route tree
- Good hands
- Elite stop/start ability
- High touchdown rate
- Big Athletic ability, which is a bonus

That's likely why NFL scouts have him as a 1st round WR despite the raw numbers.

There's certainly no guarantee Ruggs will be a star, but I just don't see how people can pretend like the amount of talent he competed with is absolutely not the overwhelming factor in his production. Even when you consider that, he still maximized the absolute most out of his role in that offense.

Herbert is terrible, surely no team is dumb enough to waste a first round pick on him.

I know, right? I’ve been seeing that lately in these mocks. I don’t think he’ll be there, anyway, so it probably won’t matter. I think it will be either CJ Henderson or K.Chaisson, because they need both positions, pretty bad. If all three were on the board at #17, which is doubtful but they would definitely have to strongly consider Lamb. Personally, I would like it because they would be tough to deal with and they could always go CB in the 2nd. I can’t wait for this draft!

Glad to see other reaction here similar to what I had. Makes no sense after they just paid Cooper and have 2 more years of Gallup

Makes no sense?

The NFL is quite different than fantasy. The concept of taking the BPA in the NFL has been proven for years.

No telling if they take a high end WR in the first round but it actually makes sense. That player would be locked up for 5 years. Cooper is tied in for 2 years.

Might want to look at more like this

Dallas just lost Randall Cobb, a very good slot WR, He just got a 3 year $27 Million dollar contract with 18.75 Million guaranteed.

The 17th player picked last year received a contract that was 4 years for 13.3 million guaranteed. ( Plus a 5th year team option)

While the rookie contacts will increase some it won't be close to Cobb's contract at pick 17.

If Dallas can get a potential game changer for the next 5 years for a very low cost especially at a needed position which a slot position is then it makes sense to do so especially if a WR is at the top of their draft board.

Great points. Pretty much how I see it. Like I said before, I doubt he’s there but it would definitely be hard to pass on him, if he is somehow available.

Hmmm not bad. I stand corrected.
