They basically just got a smaller version of Jordan Howard.

So I don't get the draft pick, but maybe I'm wrong and they won't be making any changes to their offense. If that's the case, Montgomery will be somewhere in the RB13-18 range, max.
Howard excelled under outside zone under Fox/Gase. Pretty sure they flipped to inside zone when Nagy showed up and that’s a big part of why Howard fell off.

I don't get the Montgomery love here. I feel Davis is the better back here. All things being equal, I would see Davis beating him out for early down work. But I can see draft capital being in play. I figured they would add another back in the draft, so not surprised. I am surprised they would trade up to get a less talented back. We will see how it all turns out.

No Doubt he will fly up many draft boards. Mine will not be one of them.

Making college players miss is one thing. Making the Vikings or Packer's miss him is quite another.

I completely agree. He will likely shoot up boards, allowing others to fall. I just don't see it in him.

Even if you don't see it in him, do you believe the scheme/situation is strong enough to raise him? Hunt wasn't thought of highly either but he landed in a great spot and his strengths were overlooked.

The situation and his draft capital definitely raises him some. I still think Davis is a better back and Cohen will certainly cut into him. He won't be a workhorse back even if he beats out Davis. I don't have any interest in him but I can see where others might. Hunt seemed like a better runner in college and then fell into a perfect situation.

Small rbs never last. With Cohen coming in at a whopping 5’8” 180 lbs, Montgomery can flourish. With all the Jordan howard hate, he still managed to volume a slew of 1k seasons. I’ll take Montgomery in that role.
Its a different NFL. Cohen is basically a WR that happens to play RB. I think you will see guys like Cohen lasting a lot longer because coaches arent trying to run them up the middle out of a power I formation.

Apparently the coaches love Cohen in Chicago. I think he has his role pretty much locked down and it will look similar to what they did with him last season.

even accounting for calendar-timed coachspeak, i don't recall Nagy ever saying anything similar to this thread's subject line about Howard.

certainly we'll need to account for some level of post-pick PR, pick justification, locker room support, etc...but if Nagy were that kind of guy (and he isn't) we would have seen him say similar things about Howard. it's possible i don't recall them, but i think given things i do recall that its more likely the Bears don't think they have drafted a smaller version of Montgomery.

that doesn't mean it isn't true, of course, but it bears consideration that they see him differently since they are the ones who will decide how to deploy him.

Wasn't this the same coach that said Trey Burton would take on the Travis Kelce role?

Too bad Trubisky not an Alex Smith ... let alone a Pat Mahomes.

Taking him at 1.2 but I’m a Bears fan who believes in Coach Nagy and his offensive mind. The Bears had limited draft capital due to the Mack and Anthony Miller deals and they still traded up for Montgomery. It’s not to be a back up or split time. Davis is a fine back up and Tarik will be all over the place. I took Alvin Kamara a few years ago just based off of Sean Payton trading up for him.
