Andy Isabella is a top 3 rookie WR. Change my mind

Postby bsp27 » Sat Mar 23, 2019 1:53 am

He has better production than every wide receiver in this class, did it a young age, and has 4.31 wheels. Comparable to Tyler Lockett / TY Hilton. He is more of a complete prospect than Butler, Metcalf, Campbell, etc.

Bold, and I like it.
I’m not quite there, but solidly a top 5 WR in my eyes. Would love to see my Packers draft him.

I have no issues with your statement so I see no need to convince you to change it. Kudos on taking said stance. :)

Lockett is a good comparison.

I haven’t watched tape on him yet but I did go through his game log cause I wanted to see if he was just eating against small shitty schools, but he had some success against bigger programs. 3-95 as a soph against Florida. As a junior he dropped 7-158 against Miss State, then as a senior he put up 13-198 vs South Florida and 15-219 against Georgia. My goodness.

I’m huge on finding the highest level of competition for looking at tape. I like what I saw also.

He's not bad, but there are much more than two other WRs in this class that have much greater profile upside with the same or better floor.

Can't fault the production, but bad ball-skills and short arms and small hands is a worrying combination of flaws for guy making the pro jump. Will the skinnier and unstriped NFL ball be a problem for him? Will he land with a QB hesitant to uncork it at his small catch-radius? He body-catches, so will he need clean separation at the catch-point to reliably come down with it, and will it handicap his run after catch threat?

He's a fantastic athlete in space, but guys with his stature becoming good NFL players typically need plus play-strength and ball-skills. I know Isabella lacks the latter already, and I worry about the former in regard to him being able to stay on schedule with his route against pro nickels and safeties doing their best to knock him off schedule. A small guy like Isabella absolutely has to be exactly where he's supposed to be when the QB expects him to be there, or he ain't getting targeted with a primary read.

Lockett has always had very strong ball-skills, which helps mitigate his short arms and small hands.

TY Hilton has also always had strong ball-skills, plus unusually long arms for his height.

Isabella is a much faster Trent Taylor with much worse ball-skills, or Tavon Austin with longer arms (no one has shorter arms than Tavon Austin).

Lotta little guys do well in college and then can't translate their success to the NFL. Trent Taylor is one of my recent disappointments in that regard. Thought he'd be the next Wes Welker / Julian Edelman. I get Isabella is a faster, but the role would be similar. I'd take a shot with a late 2nd... Maybe.

Im not going to change your mind. There is no consensus top 3 WRs in this class. Isabella has a lot of hype thats going to be carried into the NFL draft. Is he my top 3? No, but I dont dislike this take at all.

Pretty much this.

I don't even consider this a hot take; this class is so up in the air. There is a fair amount of depth but I don't see anyone obviously separating themselves from the pack.

I also agree with this 100 percent. I believe him to be a perfect comp to Hilton. I think there could be 3 to 4 guys in this draft with a higher ceiling but also a lower floor. Hes very under rated and i like that.

Top 3 is a little hawt taek-y, but I do like him. I have Harry, Brown, Campbell and Metcalf ahead of him, but I think he belongs at the top of the second tier. I have the 1.11 and could see myself grabbing him there if he lands in a good spot.

He's probably just outside my top 5 right now, but I haven't watched any of his tape yet.
Harry
Harmon
A. Brown
Boykin
Morgan

are my top 5 right now. I would have Isabella around 7/8 probably.

I don't get where these Trent Taylor comparisons are coming from at all. Isabella ran a 4.31, Taylor ran a 4.63. Isabella much more athletic, better college resume, and is a prototypical Z / field stretcher. Taylor is a slot receiver.

His combine really is damn near identical to Tyler Lockett,

Lockett 4.4, 6.89 3 cone, 4.07 20 SS, 35.5 Vert, 121 Broad
Isabella 4.31, 6.95, 4.15, 36.5, 121
