Chiefs' RB situation

Postby Prison_Mike » Fri Jan 11, 2019 12:21 pm

How do you guys think the Chiefs' RB situation plays out?

It seems like the most logical (and probably most likely) scenario is that they draft a mid-round Running Back.
Who do you think they will target?

How likely are they to go the Free Agent route?
(I think Bell is out of the question - too much money that would be better spent elsewhere. But Coleman? Ingram? etc.)

Is there any chance that Damien Williams is the long-term answer?
The only thing his contract extension guarantees is that he'll be on the roster - but is that as the backup? bridge guy? RBBC?

Also, what are the implications from a dynasty standpoint? :
- Is Damien Williams anything more than a sell-high?
- If they draft an RB - is he immediately put in the conversation as the 1.01, regardless of talent-level?
- Are you holding any Free Agent RB's on the off-chance they land in KC?

(I know this is all speculation - but I think it's a conversation worth having....even if it's already been had lol)
What do y'all think?!

Long term? Probably less likely. But for a while? A good bet better than his value would dictate.

Have we not seen enough mid round and even relatively early round RBs flounder lately? The Seahawks and Bucs used a 1st and 2nd round pick respectively on RBs last offseason yet Chris Carson and Peyton Barber were their starters this year.

Add to that the Chiefs are built around a franchise QB where protecting him will be of great importance and most young RBs struggle with pass protection and there is a decent shot Williams gets a crack at things next year.

I'll just give you my opinions briefly, which is pretty much all anyone can do.

It seems like the most logical (and probably most likely) scenario is that they draft a mid-round Running Back.
How likely are they to go the Free Agent route?
Pretty unlikely. Reid has drafted but, to wit, never paid big money for RB production.

Is there any chance that Damien Williams is the long-term answer?
Sure why not? He looked decent. Scheme matters more than RB. He's a decent fit. There's not a high chance but there's some chance. He's a sell at a mid, even a low second though.
Also, what are the implications from a dynasty standpoint? :
- Is Damien Williams anything more than a sell-high?
He's a sell-moderately medium haha

- If they draft an RB - is he immediately put in the conversation as the 1.01, regardless of talent-level?
The 1.01? No. A third or fourth round RB drafted to KC doesn't mean he'll be the bellcow. But some may move him up a tier based on that opportunity.
- Are you holding any Free Agent RB's on the off-chance they land in KC?
Not specifically for that reason, but sure. I think a Tevin Coleman or an Ingram (who I think goes back to the saints) or any other reasonably productive FA RB is perfectly fine to hold and hope they end up in a good spot.

I think the odds are very good that KC drafts a RB before the 4th round (what I'd consider "early"). That RB will be a hot commodity. They may sign a free agent to be the starter, but for some reason I don't think that happens. Andy Reid has done well with rookie backs.

Damien Williams is definitely a sell high, but if I can't move him, there's a chance he's still the starter for part or all of next season even if they draft a rookie, so don't sell for peanuts.

I think the chances of signing Le'Veon Bell are very low even though we'd all like to see that happen for entertainment & fantasy purposes. After sitting out all of last season, he'll want monster $$ and the Chiefs know they can get production out of far cheaper backs.
Not all that counts can be counted. Not all that can be counted counts.

Williams could be the guy, but I think they are going to look for a better player this off season. The draft is where the Chiefs typically go to find RB talent, but it would not surprise me in the least if they went on the open market or made a trade. They have a hole to fill on offense and a lot on defense, they aren't going to waste any time. Their window of opportunity is 3 more years before having to pay Mahomes.

Tevin Coleman is certainly a candidate. In fact, there are a few guys from that draft class that could be. They could trade for Duke Johnson who could make for a good fit. I believe Ameer Abdullah could be fine in KC as well and would be nearly free ... but this would be a shock, as I think his career is closer to being over than being revived.

Mark Ingram? Maybe. Although I would think they would also draft a guy if they went this route. Ingram is getting older and the appeal here could be to have him start immediately while the rookie learns pass protection.

O.S. If ya find them too tiresome, just don't click on em. Just saying, that is what I do (don't do). Anyway, I'm of the opinion that they go the FA route. There will be serviceable and somewhat cheaper options that might fit well with their offense. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if KC kicked the tires on Latavius Murray. They know a bit about him from him being in their division a few years back, I doubt he resigns with Mn and he fills a short term need for KC. From what I hear around here in Mn, Abdullah will very likely resign and will have a role on special teams and serve a depth position behind Cook, Thomas, and M. Boone.

It's my own neurosis really, but sheesh. Speaking of consolidation, lets consolidate these threads

I think a lot depends on Dame William's performance in the playoffs. As long as he doesn't faceplant, I think he's the incumbent in 2019 with KC drafting a mid round rb or two.

Williams is plenty big enough and has shown he can handle the load with success when given the opportunity. Reid likes to lean on one back primarily, so barring injury i think he's the guy in 2019

Beyond that who knows. If you own Williams and you aren't a contender, you should've already sold during the fantasy playoffs. Otherwise, he's a hold imo.

Exactly. If Damien Williams is a stud during the playoffs, why in the world would Andy Reid go out and use cap space or a high-ish pick on an RB, in a bad RB class. There is zero incentive.

I personally fully expect Damien to continue his solid play in the playoffs, and establish himself as the main guy next season.

They'll draft some RB in the 5th, 6th, or 7th round, but that'll just be depth and camp bodies. If anything, the guys they draft will prob be RBs that can double as a special team specialist. If they sign a FA RB, it'll prob be a Rod Smith type on the cheap, or just resign Ware for peanuts.

They prob won't use a high-ish pick on an RB until they have to start paying Mahommes, then they can control the cost of that position.

Andy Reid has ridden guys like Spencer Ware (6th rounder), and Charcandrick West (UDFA), I don't think he cares about draft status of RBs. It's all about what you can show him on the field...and lately Damien Williams has been crushing it. Right now it's his job to lose.

If you really want to know the future of Williams role, you're just gonna have to watch the KC games and see what happens...

Or KC flops in the post season yet again and get little from the running game in a loss at home. It will be interesting to see today and i keep going back/forth on what I actually think will happen in the game. Kind of pulling for Indy to be honest, but it is not like KC winning would be a bad thing either. Luck or Mahomes in the AFCCG is entertaining regardless.

I guess that's possible for 2019 but the more likely outcome is replacement. Williams, just like Ware and West, is nothing more than a backup level talent put into service with little to no long term starter outlook. Sooner than later, they will draft the replacement. That's exactly what Hunt was for them. It's just as true for the Chiefs and Reid as it is for every other team in the NFL. There is no long term production from backup quality players.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

Agreed. Tough to go away from a guy that just put up 150 all purpose yards and a TD against a good run defense in the biggest game of the season, and biggest of his career

I don’t know that he’s the long term answer. But I feel pretty good about grabbing him in the 8th round of my startup a week ago. I’ll likely hold unless big changes are made or I get a crazy offer

Let me quote myself from the other KC RB thread:

Excluding week 17 where he scored 12.4 points in about half a game, here are Damien Williams last 4 .5ppr point totals:

17
27.3
21.5
23.9

thats 22.4 ppg.

Gurley, excluding his two games where he sat, averaged 24.4 ppg.

CMC, excluding week 17 where he played less than a quarter, averaged 21.8 ppg.

Barkley played all of every game and averaged 21.3 ppg.

4. Kamara 20.9
5. Gordon 20.8
6. Hunt 19.7
7. Elliot 19.3
8. Conner 19.3

Shoot, including that half game, he averaged 20.4 ppg in his last 5 games as the starter. Wowee
