I can’t believe anyone likes the situation. He’s not getting third down work over Riddick, probably not getting goal line work over Blount, and he will have to compete with Abdullah for first and 2nd down work. Oh, and his new head coach learned for years in the RB maddening environment in New England.

I just got him at 2.05 in a superflex. I'll take that all day. I think he will be just fine in Detroit. I'm honestly not too worried about Riddick.

I have no concerns with Abdullah at all. He'll be lucky not to be gameday inactive. Best possibility is getting cut or getting garbage minutes. Arizona wanted to draft him, and he seems a better box runner than Edmunds.

Blount and Riddick are more legit threats but- A) they are niche-y role players who don't have Kerryon's 3 down skills, B) may not be relevant next year, especially Blount.

If things go poorly, he's in a 3 headed quagmire this year. If they go well, he's a 3 down back for a team recommitting to the run. The most likely result year one is he shares duties but is the clear lead back. A year after he proves himself in that role, he pushes Blount completely aside (or off the roster) and seizes a 3 down role. He could see the same value stabilization/increase next offseason that Mixon saw this one.

Very well said.

He is by no means in a "perfect" situation, but it ain't that bad. Blount is about cooked and Abdullah is a zero.

To be honest the scariest part probably is the off-chance that Patricia continues in the BB ways of using different RBBCs each week. Although, I'm not conceived that he will think like Bill regarding weekly RB gameplans, simply because he coaches Bill's defense. I think we give too much credit to someone's affiliation with past coaches.

I had Johnson around my 1.05-1.06 in the predraft process; I probably have him around the same but I cannot say I am a fan of the landing spot..

I think Blount will be competing for 1st & 2nd down work as well. It's not like he hasn't been productive the last couple years, even if he is 31. Not a lot of tread on the tires either.

The bigger thing that worries me about Detroit is the fact that they ranked 32nd in run blocking last year and 31st in run blocking the year before. I do not care who is running the ball and it will not matter if they cannot block.

I don't care about the other running backs.

Valid concern. Thoughts on bringing in Davidson to re-tool the run game?- http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/20 ... n_cou.html

well at 2.05 I wouldnt be worried about anyone. Thats clearly an awesome spot for Kerry.

But, for real, Riddick is the pass catcher of the two, its not even close.

He's interesting, both as a talent to evaluate and in terms of the situation he is in.

The situation is a bit more complicated than some in that it's difficult to pin down whether the awful line play might be a thing of the past. It's also hard to get a real reading on the competition.

He might have turn out to have a much improved O-line in terms of talent and coaching, a renewed commitment to the run and a real willingness to make him their guy. Or, he could be the latest in a long line of Lions backs to get repeatedly hit in the backfield and then sulked at for not producing whilst the little pass catcher racks up stats. Plus Blount might vulture some goal line carries. Kerryon was a beast in short yardage though... So it's clear as mud. My own feeling is that the commitment matters and that if you think a back can be a three down guy, it makes sense as an organisation to find out. I'll gamble on the Lions, but then feel extra stupid if it's same old, same old with them.

Johnson just does not look like a pro running back. He looks stiff and lumbering. He doesn't feel fast on tape. Everything about him seems mediocre if you watch him after watching the consensus top guys in the draft. He's incredibly effective though. I think if you stopped the tape just as he got the ball, blurred him out and then just watched the other 21 guys on the field, you'd assume a great back was running. The right hole gets hit, tackles get broken, tacklers are beaten from distance and from up close. He just looks so incredibly average whilst doing it all. He struggled with injuries last year and there were times when you could see a flash of better flexibility or more speed than seemed to fit with some of his tape. I think- and it's really no more than a wild guess -that he is just really, really good at being a running back and that the ugly hurdy-gurdiness of his movements is disguising his power and speed. You could easily look back after a dismal first year though and wonder why you drafted a guy that looked like crap in college.

Cripes man, thats spot on for how I feel about him. I just cant get a handle on how he will translate to the NFL, even more so than just about anyone. At this point I think Id be thrilled to snag him late enough (like the guy that got him at 2.05 or whatever) but I'm just plain too scared to spend real capital on him.

I was a mild supporter and apologist of A. Abdullah. I was of the mind set that their oline and specifically their run blocking was horrible. I never looked it up but if they actually were 31st, 32nd in the league with their run blocking, why are so many in the fantasy community so ready to label Abdullah a bust and simultaneously say that Johnson is worth a mid first? Makes little sense to me. Abdullah does have talent and simply wasn't used properly and the entire time he was in an environment that wasn't conducive for running the ball consistently. I'm not interested in the Detroit backfield until I see an improved scheme. Now, there are multiple mouths to feed. Blount will get his share. Riddick is a superior pass catching rb, etc. Not sure that improvement in the short term will happen but, not sure it won't. They did address the oline in their draft so, there is a chance. I'm hoping that Abdullah gets moved to a better situation before I write him off.

The running back position is about skill set fitting scheme coupled with opportunity. None of that happened with Abdullah. He didn't all the sudden start to suck after he was drafted. There is more to it imo.

Well the old adage in fantasy football is that if you wait until you see it, it's already too late.

The Lions I believe get an important lineman back from injury, drafted another lineman in the first round, and brought in a new line coach. Will that fix it? Maybe, maybe not. But if you wait until you see it fixed then a mid 1st is no longer going to get it done for their RB because that offense with a good line would be one heck of a situation and once that happens, it will be very difficult to buy that RB.

So like all things fantasy football we're hedging a bit here. Cheaper than the ceiling, more expensive than the floor for Kerryon.

This seems like kind of a weird statement. "He didn't all of the sudden start to suck after he was drafted"? What? Are you operating under the delusion that every player that was good in college is good in the NFL too?

Maybe Abdullah was put into an impossible situation and is actually pretty good. Maybe. It's a long shot. Far more likely is that he's one of the literally thousands players that have come into the NFL and not been nearly as good as people hoped they'd be.

Maybe Abdullah will bounce back and become an important part of the offense, but it's probably far far more likely that he's not a part of the offense at all. Heck there was just an article in the Detroit Free Press a few days ago that because neither Abdullah nor Riddick play special teams, there is a pretty good chance that one of them will end up being a post June 1st cut. And Riddick has a pretty defined role that gives him some value to the team that Abdullah does not, so it seems unlikely that Riddick will be that guy.

One could only hope he gets set free Don't see him getting a fair shot with all they have invested in the rest of the rb room.

Abdullah/Riddick owner here. I'm all but done with this backfield. Sure they may have made oline upgrades but this situation is a mess to me. I don't think there's anyway the rook gets meaningful work unless he BLOWS us away. Riddick will still be 3rd down back and he's very good at it. I'm sure blount gets what little 1 yd TD there will be.

The player may be good but I don't like the situation that much
