How is Keelan Cole ranked so low in early fantasy rankings?

Postby jman3134 » Thu May 31, 2018 9:51 pm

Given the momentum from last year, how does he rank over 200 in some early rankings?

He may get some slot work this season.

Jags brought in Moncrief who should start. Chark was drafted pretty high and has solid skills. Lee is the WR1 on this team. Worth a flyer but his role is unsettled at this point.

UDFA. Small sample size. Uncertain role moving forward.

He was an excellent waiver pickup down the stretch for a lot of fantasy teams last year, but he’s still facing an uphill battle to consistent fantasy relevance.
Both are 12-team 1QB PPR dynasties

Why?

- undrafted
- depth-chart chaos
- Bortles sucks
- Jags are run-heavy

The Jaguars WR depth-chart is absurd. It's one of the deepest in the league in terms of recently invested young talent and yet that depth is both unnecessary and wasted on an offense that has Bortles throwing the ball and is building around the run-game. Why did Jax spend a quality pick on Chark? Why did they throw 10 million guaranteed at Moncrief on a one year deal? Why give Lee 18 million guaranteed? Why do and spend all this on these three players when Keelan Cole and Dede Westbrook already showed potential last year and are locked up until 2021 for practically nothing?

For the record, OP, I was very impressed by Keelan Cole last year. But his ADP is logical considering he's just one of several hungry young mouths trying to be fed now by one of the worst starting QBs in the NFL on a team that made a big investment in three other wide-receivers this offseason.

I think Dede Westbrook is more likely to get the slot work.

Doesn't Lee kick over to the slot in three wide sets?

He's not got much working in his favor. He has a lot of competition in a non-high powered offense. He looked good last year, but it's going to be very difficult for him this year.

I like Cole as a flier - but that is all he is. Others have mentioned why.

I agree with your question- why so little love? Guy could emerge like Antonio Brown did- small school, late pick or undrafted, smallish frame. Maybe better that he is getting no press so you can grab him late

He is a good WR but in a very bad situation. Too many mouths to fill on a run first team with a bad QB. If he ends up on a different team he might have a shot cause he did look pretty good last year when he did get an opportunity. Unless you have a 30+ man roster he's gonna be tough to hold on to

At face value I understand the lack of love. Numerous points about why he's just a flyer have been mentioned previously. On the other hand, I watched a number of his games last year and he just didn't drop anything if it was close. The game didn't appear too big for him in the slightest. I expect him to be starting by mid-season barring injury. Absolutely LOVE his potential.

Agree with the consensus - too many WR's on a run-1st team. Don't forget they added ASJ also. Jags said they felt they were getting an elite TE in ASJ. Probably hyperbole, but might be something more...

Interestingly enough, Cole is going later than Westbrook in many ADP / rankings (68 vs 63 in DLF + 83 vs 65 in football guys). I almost think Cole has a better shot at fantasy relevance than Westbrook, but who knows.

I wish I had the patience to dig up old threads. This board is super bipolar here. Literally nothing has changed besides the addition of Moncrief (a hated player on these boards due to his underwhelming performances) and Chark (rookie gadget player). Arob didnt re-sign and Cole was great playing alongside Westbrook and Lee last year. Given his skillset, it seems like there is a complete paradigm shift, where people on here don't think he can beat out Moncrief (whom I believe is his direct competition).

Edit: plus Hurns is gone!

I know from owning Cole last year, he was sort of the forgotten man for snaps/targets when all the other WRs were healthy. Dede, Lee, and the departed Allen Hurns all played over him. Case in point, Cole had 0 targets in the wildcard round and 2 in the divisonal round last season.

Now you replace Hurns with Moncrief and add ASJ (and Chark), it's just rough to project him seeing the volume in a run first offense there.

I do think he's arguably the best one there, but he was also a 24 year old rookie so the coaches probably feel like Dede Westbrook can develop more and has a higher ceiling considering his impressive college career and all.
