I mean we've seen time and again what brain trauma and mental issues can result in. Thank God we have this much decency left

This feels like "see you in 2022" to me. It's an almighty press release to put out if he was thinking "just a few weeks". If it was that sort of time frame, you just "take a break from the team" like we've seen in the past.

Can't say the Falcons are exactly Superbowl bound this year, so I don't see him rushing back "for the team".

It’s really hard to say, though I tend to agree that it seems like more than just a “I need a couple weeks for ____.” I hope it’s a 2022 return to be honest, because if he is going through some serious stuff I could see retirement as a possibility.

I was wondering about that too. Never know when someone wants to hang them up early. Wish him the best.

I was considering Ridley a buy low, especially if on a contender with limited depth, but retirement is my concern. Or Luck-like, stringing you along all offseason or even in season and then suddenly, poof, done.

I think he'll attempt to return. But I agree it's impossible to predict with any certainty, mostly because not even Ridley knows what his condition will be in 10 months.

Remember, Ricky Williams retired early in 2004 for the same sort of reasons. All the jokes were about his weed use, but the truth is the weed was a coping mechanism for his mental unwellness. He eventually returned, then was suspended for a season, and played a few more years. But in 2004, he thought he was retiring for good and he was okay with that decision.

This really is a wait-and-see situation.

The thing is he hasn’t had the phat 2nd contract yet, so I’m leaning towards him being back.

I think you could make a pretty clean argument for the flip side of this coin too: the fact he is taking time away from the sport now, before he has received that second contract, indicates the severity of his current situation and his unwillingness to put money over his well-being.

Again, we’re just guessing. But I don’t know enough about Ridley to know whether another contract is a motivator at this time.

Money don’t matter when your head ain’t right & sometimes if your head’s right it don’t matter then either … can’t buy peace of mind despite what a lot of society would like to think

I really hope he takes the time he needs to recover from whatever he is going through. This is a HUGE step in the right direction as far as setting an example for men to seek help when they need it. Ridley is not only doing what he needs to do but is also making it easier for others to do this as well. All the guys in this forum know the BS stigma surrounding men and seeking mental health help ( there is also a stigma for women on this issue). We see jackasses like Marcellus Wiley calling Ridley weak and all that Bs. Its tough for a guy to do this kind of stuff publicly. Masculinity ends up being questioned by some in these situations and it makes it even harder for men to go through with it. So i really commend Ridley here and i hope others do this as well. We all know how hard the last 2 years have been, many men need it
