Week 17 Idea

Postby DynastyDeepDive » Thu Dec 21, 2017 4:28 am

Wanted to share an idea I do for both my leagues on week 17 of NFL. To extend the fun in fantasy leagues one extra week after the championship I have a one week contest for all owners in our league.

All owners set their best lineups and which ever team accumulates the most points gets their entry fee back. Both my leagues have a $200 entry fee so for the owners who have a rough year and don't make the playoffs have at least a shot of getting their money back.

It's been really well recieved and extends the fun one more week for everyone. Thought I'd share the idea if you wanted to add it to your league.

Awesome idea. I run my work league and I do the same thing. We all add in an extra $5 or $10 to the buy-in (whatever people vote for that year) making it $60 or $120 pay out. We call it week 17 Pro Bowl, any player in the player pool is playable. We make the scoring the exact same as our league scoring so there is no guess work. 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1Flex (no Def or K). If anyone ties we just split the pot evenly. Makes for a fun week 17!

Don't the best teams just get an even better seaosn? If you're a bottom dweller, I don't see how your chances are any better in week 17 than any other week.

As we know in fantasy, this game is half luck with match ups and injuries. I'm in two 10 team leagues and in the last year the bottom half were the winners. Gives us all one more week to watch red zone too!!!

Too much randomness in Week 17 with players resting or teams just putting them on IR.

But it would be fun to do something with Week 17 to keep people interested. Just maybe a smaller amount or something with less impact. Maybe first waiver wire transaction order based on results before resetting.

Or maybe an extra draft pick? I like the idea of having a “Toilet Bowl” tournament for the non playoff teams. Keeps people interested when they don’t make the playoffs. Gives a little incentive to keep on.

There are a lot of ways to keep folks interested, but a toilet bowl wouldn’t do it for me. I have no interest in competing for 3rd, 5th place, etc.

I like the other ideas we’ve seen around the board that revolve around money/power.

I like the idea someone mentioned some time ago... an allstar game for week 17. It wasn't really detailed, but in my mind it would be (in a 12 team league)... teams divided by finishing spots, so: 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 vs. 11, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1. Each owner, in collaboration with others on their team, picks their allstar team. The winning team gets "something"... whether it be money or just a scramble of the upcoming season draft order (i.e. winning team gets 2nd round picks 1-6 and losing team gets 7-12 ordered by season rank). Seemed the best idea for extending the season to me and still looking at implementing it in some fashion.

A couple of my leagues do this with each team being able to choose anyone from the player pool. They don't have to be on your team. If you want Brady Bell Gurley Zeke Nuk Evans Gronk as a starting lineup then go for it. It gives everyone a chance at a few bucks.

I don't know if any of you noticed, but a few years ago, the NFL changed the schedule so that divisional games are played the final week, creating more meaningful games the final week of the season...

so...

I think it's a great time for you to go back to having your championship game week 17!

Of course, I've always held mine week 17-it is a team game, after all, and with enough depth your rosters should be able to withstand one or two of your players sitting out...

Also - to take some of the sting off - have two conferences in your league - this is easiest to do in a 16 team league - then the conference championships are week 16. We make a big deal about conference championships, so much so that the title game is almost an afterthought. For instance - the conference champs get a good chunk of change, and the payoff for winning the title in week 17 is only a fraction of what they won the week before.
Plus, you can then have your 3rd place, 5th place, and other meaningless games that final week and toss a little bit of cash at the winners if you wish.

Anyway - something to consider for 2018!!

We do the Coaches Challenge from Week 17 through the Super Bowl. Pick anyone you like, but you can only pick them once. Top three points after five weeks win money. Gives everyone something to play for after the fantasy season has ended, and if your team sucked during the season, you get a shot at winning something.
The One Who Knocks
12 team league, 27 man rosters (more during the offseason), 7 man Practice Squad. Standard league with big play scoring for IDPs.

QB: L. Jackson, K. Mond, K. Murray, A. Richardson, D. Thompson-Robinson
RB: L. Bellamy, Z. Charbonnet, N. Chubb, N. Harris, K. Hunt, K. Ingram, C. Edwards-Helaire, J. Mixon, D. Vaughn, J. Warren, K. Williams
WR: C. Austin, O. Beckham, A. Cooper, C. Davis, J. Downs, M. Goodwin, N. Harry, J. Jefferson, J. Jeudy, T. Johnson, M. Jones, A. Lazard, M. Mims, S. Moore, R. Rice, J. Smith-Schuster, J. Washington, A. Wesley, N. Westbrook-Ikhine
TE: N. Fant, H. Henry, K. Pitts, D. Washington
K: Z. Gonzalez, R. Gould, B. McManus
DL: J. Hughes, T. Wilson
LB: D. Harris, J. Houston, S. Leonard
DB: E. Forbes, A. Robertson

2024 picks: 1, 1, 3, 5, 5, 6, 7
2025 picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Our league is a week 17 championship, and I hate it. Hate it. It is a 10 team 2 qb league. I lost Wentz, DJ, and ARob (or AR15 if you prefer) to injury, and am now subject to Gurley being benched. Won the league running away, and now stare the prospect of losing the championship in the face. I guess I don't understand what is really to gain or be proven in a week 17 with seemingly everything on the line, when there are enough factors at play within or out of a fantasy players control. Its like if a really good team in any sport had to bench a couple of their good players on a whim at the end of a game, "just because it adds a new and interesting wrinkle."

After reading this thread I decided to add a week 17 contest - highest scoring lineup wins an additional draft pick - the last pick of the draft.

Is there a way to do this on MFL, but instead of using a lineup from your team, each owner can come up with their own lineup from the entire player pool?
