Preseason Week 1 discussion!

So I'll post my annual one comment about the preseason games. In the 40 years I've been following the NFL, I've never watched them. These games are important for those fringe players trying to make teams but as a fan the games are unwatchable for me. The best part about this time of year is watching the overreaction of owners making moves based on preseason action. It can be quite entertaining.

X2 only time the results mean anything to me are in my 32 teamers because just a sliver of hope that someone *might* be an average backup makes them worth a pickup sometimes (32 teams max 58 theoretical roster size)

Respectfully, there have been several blurbs about Gathers this off season.

Not just blurbs, a damn near fever pitch from Cowboys fans.

Not just blurbs, a damn near fever pitch from Cowboys fans. But skip seems to only believe in players that put up 3+ years of production, or generally goes contrarion to any new opinion, hot take, player, etc. I'll admit I have seen a few takes from him I agree with recently, but for the most part you could ignore his takes and be just fine.

i don't disagree with the larger point about the value of preseason blurbs. generally there aren't grains of salt large enough.

but he's certainly someone that's been getting talked about (whatever the value of that talk ends up being).

I enjoy the pre-season games on the teams I've done the most work on, knowing where the camp battles and depth questions are the most critical .. then it can be a lot of fun focusing on or watching positions .. This year I've done a lot more research on all 32 teams, so I'm looking forward to the games much more this year

I'll take note of anybody who performs well in the preseason and the only way to find out is watch the games. A couple seasons ago Diggs had some spectacular kick returns, he immediately went on my radar. Preseason is just another tool in the process, to ignore it leaves value on the table and on anothers roster.

So last night I received a message from someone that I discuss dynasty football with off board that Gathers was just moved for a 2018 1st round pick in his league. And I laughed and I laughed...

Wow, tell me at least it is a TE Premium League or start 2 or something. I probably like college bball more than the NFL, so Gathers was on my deep watch list from the get go and that does not even seem likely in any scenario for that price.

Back of the round in a 32 team league?

* McCaffrey looks really comfortable versus NFL competition
* Watson's accuracy downfield was brutal... looked great on short throws (hmmm, where did I see that pattern last.... oh, his college tape)
* People have been sleeping on Kelvin... looks like his usual self boxing people out and dominating with his size, not pretty but very effective
* HOU QBs in general had a bad showing I felt.

Obviously it doesn't happen often, but preseason games HAVE forecasted a star in advance before. A throbbing, mega obvious example is Dak Prescott, just last year.

Anyway, I'm mainly poking my head in here to correct that deceptive, lazy blurb on Braxton Miller rotoworld put out. It implied Miller wasn't the starter in 2-wide. Wrong. He was the starter in 2-wide on 8 of 11 snaps, and moved to the slot in 3-wide for the other three snaps as Strong came in for those sets to man the outside. smh @ rotoworld blurbs.

Tell him his league is hot garbage.

Gathers is interesting, but it was just the Hall of Fame game, a pre-preseason game for the preseason. Good lord. And it was just three catches!

Skip Bayless -- known Cowboys homer, among other cringy things -- slobbered all over Gathers' TD catch on his show, so I'm guessing that has something to do with it. Too bad they didn't understand that Bayless was only focusing on Gathers because he was trying to redirect Shannon Sharpe from pointing out how mediocre 'Taco' looked, i.e. the guy Bayless was originally hyping up before the game. Didn't work, btw. Sharpe still mocked Bayless about it. lel
