What about Chris Conley?

Are we still holding Chris Conley? I really feel like the additional time may bear fruit in his case, but right now I think he's my third player out on my roster when I make cuts for the draft. Higher upside than Chris Hogan still?

Hogan's upside is capped by Cooks. Conley's upside is capped by Alex Smith and the Andy Reid offense. Neither one is really very appealing to me. Conley's athletic but with Tyreek Hill emergence and Kelce proving to be a stud at TE his upside seems limited in the short term. If Maclin is healthy it's even more limited.

I'm a Conley believer, he has shown some flashes when given the chance. With that, I'm not sure he will ever get a real chance in KC. I could see a Marvin Jones type scenario where he ends up producing in his final 2 years of his contract then leaves down.

I have him in a couple leagues but plan on dropping him. The theoretical upside is there, but in reality he's no better than the 4th option in the Chiefs passing game.

I'd re-visit as a stash at the end of the upcoming season but I don't see him doing anything to help a team this season. The opportunities just aren't there.

If you drafted the guy, you knew you had to be patient. Hold for one more year unless your rosters are shallow or you are loaded. Still think its too early to give up complete hope.

How long can you wait until Mahomes takes over for Alex Smith?

:P

I'll give it until their bye week (week 10)

His physical abilities are crazy good. Back when I worked on an easier way to arrive at the equivalent of SPARQ scores using just combine metrics and standard deviations, Conley had the 6th highest score of any player, out of the 2055 players I had data on since the year 2000.

That said, I'm not buying him or anything. Physical freak skill players that never make an impact are a dime a dozen, even if he is at the top end of that curve. He's a great end-of-bench stash if your league is deep enough and you can get him for cheap/free though.

With the Chiefs adding Mahomes I think Conley is an excellent end of bench stash that can be had for pennies/free. His skill set plays right into Mahomes cannon arm. In addition to his metrics, Conley is about as high character guy you can find, to go along with a hard work ethic and high aptitude.

For me he's still a hold. His current lack of relevance isn't due to an inability to play the game. He's flashed a when given the chance, but in the current system he's not given many targets. He'd be a drop if he wasn't skilled enough to be on the field, but he was in on 80% of the snaps last year (20% more than Maclin). He's just not being targeted in the current offense scheme.

Conley is a buy IMO. the only reason I was down on him was Alex Smith, but with the addition of Mahomes (my QB1 in this class) i can see a light at the end of the tunnel. Plus lets be real, Jeremy Maclin is probably past his prime and i could see Conley being the top option out wide in the passing game regardless and only second overall to Kelce. I definitely wouldn't be dropping him this off season. I have offered up Conley in one league to improve my draft position but will look at buying him in other leagues.

If you have to wait two years for Chris Conley to maybe be a WR3, then it's not worth it. Think about all the WR talent that will likely come into the league in between then. Unless Conley flashes some serious potential, he's not going to be anything more than a team's WR3/4.
