Tyler Gaffney

Postby Purple Pride » Fri Aug 12, 2016 10:41 am

Why is no one talking about Tyler Gaffney?

I'll be honest I fell for the silence and dropped him to pick up T West a week ago, this is after I held on to him for 2 years waiting for something to happen. Then it appears he had a good preseason game. 2-days after I dropped him someone else grabbed him, so now I am hitting my self for not even waiting for the first preseason game before dropping him :wall:

So what is it.... do you think I will end up feeling ok for dropping him as maybe he does nothing or do some of you feel I am a moron and will always regret dropping him?

Have a great day.

He is behind Lewis, Blount, and White at the very least and likely behind Bolden too, which is a main reason. And watching a few of his plays, I didnt think he looked good. Nothing to say that he should play over those guys or a healthy Donald Brown or DJ Foster

I would rather take a flier on many other guys

I think people are missing the boat on him. He's been injured and they have still kept him. He's behind Blount and Bolden for the power back role and Blount has been uninspiring to say the least. He is not competing with Lewis or White, they bring a different skill set to the table.

A power back that in 5 out of his 6 years in the league has averaged 4-5 ypc isn't "uninspiring". He's pretty damn good at what he does and Bill Belichick knows exactly how to use each player to their talents. I don't see Gaffney getting any kind of significant work outside of the preseason as long as Blount is on that roster.

Yeah I guess I am saying his outlook isn't that great in my opinion. Yeah what he has done for them has been very good, but he's going on 30 coming off of a hip injury, I'm not sure I want to pencil him in for another typical season. He might prove me wrong, nonetheless I have stashed Gaffney where I can.

Probably because he's been on IR since like 2004 it seems like.

He's one of 500 possibilities at RB for the Pats.

He only played in the third-quarter so I'm not particularly interested yet. His big run had a lot more to do with hapless third-team defenders than his own merit.

It's tough for Gaffney right now because he probably needs to prove he has enough potential upside as Blount's power-back backup to move Bolden off the roster despite the latter's significant special-team's value (he's a good kick/punt coverage gunner). Odds are Gaffney won't make final cuts.

I don't hate the guy, it's just a tough situation for him in NE.
Madadamus wrote:He is not competing with Lewis or White, they bring a different skill set to the table.
Indirectly he is absolutely competing with them, because despite their differnet roles, it's unlikely NE will keep more than four RBs on the active roster. Lewis, Blount, Bolden (probably gonna make it because he's a special-teams ace)... and so White, Foster, Gaffney all possibly fighting for that last spot. Odds are it will be White or Foster, because Lewis needs his own backup, and Bolden is a passable Blount backup already.

Best bet is Gaffney ends up on the practice-squad if he shows well in preseason. If he doesn't, he'll just get cut.

West looks good this year. I think that was a good pick up, TBH.

Update:

I'm reading reports now that the Pats have been pleased with Gaffney as both a blocker and gunner on special-teams. If true, I think this greatly increases his odds to make the team. He may be competing directly with Bolden now for a roster spot.

Baby steps, dude. My earlier post explained why I thought he was at best fighting for a practice-squad spot. Now he might have a shot at more.

And btw, he would effectively be Blount's backup. What Lewis/White do for the Pats doesn't overlap much with what Blount does, you know.
