Postby clarion contrarion » Wed Mar 23, 2016 10:11 am

extension for sean payton ...... what a massive overpay for a glorified OC that has 3 division titles in 10 years , 2 playoff wins since the 2009 super bowl and 2 losing seasons in a row . Jesus belichick must be worth 50 MM a year in New Orleans.

He's still a very good coach in the NFL, I would say top 5 of active coaches - personally.

I'm more of the belief that the problem with the Saints is less about the coaching than it is the players.

They have some massive holes on both sides of the ball - the defense is an absolute disaster.

However, that is a ton of money for him.

I should probably know this but will ask anyway - does the coach salary count against the teams salary cap? If not, does it really matter what the owner is willing to pay him?

He's an overrated coach, yeah. But at least he's better than Jeff Fisher.

it does not fireman ed although the head coach and assts should have a separate salary cap in my opinion . I think that would be awesome watching coaches run out the string or the browns having to hire a jr high football coach because they were coach cap hell and could only offer 52,00 a years for a new voice and direction for the franchise every other season.
The other coach related salary note from up here on my high horse , no state college funded by taxpayers can have a coach making more than that states governor. That is an abomination to taxpayers of course just one of so many ridiclous policies .

Then poorer states wouldn't be able to compete with bigger states. Then the universities wouldn't make as much money as they do now. Alabama HAS to pay Nick Saban that massive salary otherwise Texas or Florida or FSU, etc would get any coach they wanted. (I'm assuming Florida, Texas, California, New York, etc. pay their politicians more than an Alabama or Rhode Island or Wyoming). Or even worse, private universities would not only be better academically, they'd be better than public universities athletically too.

Average to good coaches get overpaid for the same reason that average to good QBs do. This just highlights that great coaches and great QBs are underpaid. Brady and Rodgers should be given a minority ownership steak in the teams. That's how good they are

Whether deserving or not, I'm impressed enough that the Saints are sticking their neck out here in a time when most coaches would be about to get lined up in front of a firing squad after back-to-back 7-9 seasons Long gone are the days of coaches staying coaches for the long term. Coaches are generally cast in the sewer sometimes even if they are 0successful (Marty Schottenheimer). To be fair to Payton, the Saints have never been worse than 7-9 during his tenure (not too many teams could say the same), reached the post season 5 out of the last 10 years, and they are 87-57 over those 10 seasons (.604) which is good for 10th among all active coaches.
If you can't leave at least a 20% tip, you can't afford to eat out.

To the best of my knowledge, taxpayers do not pay for coaches salaries. Schools have separate funds from money generated from athletics. Often times the money football brings into a school will also subsidize many of the sports that bring in zero dollars.

I would actually rank Payton as one of the best coaches in the league. There are a million factors that go into winning and losing.

With Payton I at least know that I have one of the best offensive minds in the league on my side.

I have to ask...do you think Mike Tomlin is a good coach?

Because I thought it was pretty much generally accepted that he is a glorified timeout manager who doesn't call any plays...

tomlin is adequate he is very strong relating to the players but the steelers blow too many games against inferior competition for me to consider him a good coach . He&the steelers have lost like 10-12 games against teams that drafted in the top 10 the following season in the last 5 years . I know the any given sunday rule but he has overseen a festival of ridiculous losses and for that he cannot be considered elite or even close.

Completely agree. The issues facing NO squarely rest on the shoulders of GM Mackey Loomis, and his never-ending ability to crush the team's salary cap. Not Payton's coaching ability.

that is a nice narrative but the steelers have been in salary cap hell since they won the 2008 super bowl just getting some relief as the cap sky rocketed the last 2 years . Part of the problem is easy enough to understand so easy payton saw it himself as the year they won the super bowl they passed less and ran more which will help shorten the game and shroud defensive shortcomings . They suck outside of new orleans that at least partly can be attributed to the coaching/preparation , if the salary cap doesn't prevent them from being good at home then it doesn't on the road either .

Disagree. That team is not built to win on the road, nor is it built by Sean Payton. He is an offensive mind with instincts that won him a Super Bowl.
Just a guy who loves fantasy football - specifically defense.

gary kubiak won a super bowl , he will never be confused with vince lombardi . payton had a great year no argument except the bounty asterisk * . A great coach in my eyes is one that gets the most out of his team and winning 3 division titles in 10 years especially in that paddy cake division ... MEH !
