Cannot stand Eli AND Archie. Peyton gets a pass because he's the lightbulb-headed qb of our dreams but the 2004 draft was ridiculous. Eli acting entitled and making demands before ever playing a pro-snap because of his brother's and dad's success and the perceived better "marketability" in NYC also set a recent precedent for draft picks being more important than teams. As a Charger fan I hated AJ Smith (let LT, Neal, Jackson, Harrison, Sproles, Brees, Turner and Castillo walk way too early, among others) too but you play for who you are drafted by. If everyone with clout (IE-most 1st rounders) did this, imagine the non-sense that would occur every season. Plus his two rings were defensive based and both still relied unnecessarily on miraculous catches by WR's. Yet I suppose my argument is silly because I didn't want him here in the first place, or rivers fwiw #BREES

As I said in the other thread, a lot of this hate seems to be predicated on his dictating which team he got drafted by. The fact that he spurned AJ Smith makes that a lot easier for me to swallow and it worked out for the best in both San Diego and New York.

He didn't really spurn A.J. Smith, his whole hissy fit about not playing for San Diego was just a mechanism to get him to New York. Archie had a hard on to get him to New York, they whole "he won't play for San Diego" thing was just a ploy to force a trade. If it would have been any other team or any other GM they would have done the same thing. If you watch the NFL Net "Caught In The Draft" episode about the 2004 draft it's pretty apparent that was the plan. Besides, if it was really about not wanting to go to a franchise that was "mismanaged" or somehow unworthy of having a Manning on their roster, if San Diego had passed on him he could have been drafted by Oakland or Cleveland. No, it was all about getting little princess Eli to New York.
