I saw ArryIT had posted a link for Freewill as I was flipping through, but that was it. I never have, and honestly never will, miss any band more than I miss Rush!

It’s weird. I like a bunch of bands that were influenced by Rush (Fates Warning, Tool, Coheed & Cambria and the aforementioned Porcupine Tree, just to name a few), but I just can’t stand Rush. I think it’s mostly Geddy Lee’s voice that irritates me. I’ve tried, too. It’s not like I just heard “Tom Sawyer” and “Working Man” on classic rock radio and wrote them off. I asked some hardcore Rush fans for recommendations and went out and bought Hemispheres and 2112, but it just didn’t click with me.

Here is a list of Rush Instrumentals if you're trying to avoid Geddy Lees voice

YYZ & La Villa Strangiato are both really enjoyable but that is personal preference.

And you may already be aware of this but Steve Wilson from Porcupine Tree apparently does a lot of album remixes - here is an article with a full catalog.

Yes.
I was fortunate to be able to see them a few times over the last six years or so. I was a late adopter, though quite familiar with the band as two of my siblings were big fans. There was Rush playing in the house often growing up. Like M-Dub, it was Geddy's voice that rubbed me the wrong way.

However, You want to talk musicianship? Rush is unparalleled in the catalog they created. I really don't think they have a "peer" in terms of what they were working at. Bob Dylan is my favorite songwriter of all time, and I got past the way he sings, so I really gave it a go with Rush. Eventually, I didn't mind Geddy's pitch anymore. And frankly, if you're the type who likes to sing along Geddy won't make you feel like an idiot for doing so! He's pretty forgiving that way.

2020 was a sad year for so many reasons, not least among them the passing of Neil Peart. Anyone who wasn't fortunate enough to get the chance to see him play his kit live really missed something special. I don't care what ranklings/lists say, Neil is my #1 rock drummer of all time (Though as a Wilco fan, Glen Kotche makes that band go and ranks highly for me as well). A consummate professional, dealt a really tough hand by life, and then as he approached the end of his mortality was robbed of a peaceful retirement. Which was all he craved in the last several years anyway. Really tragic.

Spirit of Radio always makes me smile when I hear it. Timeless commentary on the business side of music, why that old corporate model isn't optimal (and has frankly been failing for years), and the undefinable quality that makes us feel so good when we hear a band we like. Music is special, and Spirit of Radio captures that feeling perfectly. And that among so many other great songs. Rush is perennially an under appreciated band, but I'm not sure that's the way history will ultimately remember them.

I was lucky enough to see them twice. I heard their last tour was epic - the documentary film about it certainly was. 8-) They'll certainly be missed - but since their music will be around forever (hopefully) they'll always be around. :)

I was reading a story today about an individual who's going to be memorialized in a statue at our state capitol. Your post made me think of a quote that was part of the article. Paraphrasing, but basically it was, "We all die twice. Once when we lose our mortality, and a second time when those still living forget about us."

I agree that Rush will always be around. Because people won't forget about them.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

— Percy Shelley's "Ozymandias"

Here’s a little treat for the Rush fans. If you guys aren’t already following the Two Minutes to Late Night YouTube channel, I highly recommend subscribing, especially if you’re into metal/hard rock. It’s a treasure trove of cool bands collaborating on awesome cover songs.
