SF Strategy- How many QBs to hold?

Postby never_punts » Thu Apr 23, 2020 7:50 am

just wondering everyone's thoughts on moving bench QBs in SF.

More specifically, at what point are offers just too good for you to hold on to a 4th or 5th back up QB?

I've had tons of really good offers I've turned down in the past week for my bench QBs just because I like the security of 2 back ups. It's getting to the point where I'm choosing safety over value.

At what point is the return on the QB just too good to pass up in sf? Do competitive teams succeed when making aggressive win-now moves that leave them with only 3 QBs?

Just depends on your depth at other positions. I moved Josh Allen for Joe Mixon last year during a title run, leaving me with only Mahomes and Mayfield.

I have found that my best teams tend to have two top 12 QB's who are pretty match up proof with a solid QB in reserve. Then I have a couple of those fringe types, the Bridgewaters, Locks and Tannehills who may or may not pop. Ill be honest I hoard them as much as I can you can never have enough of them and they make a huge difference when you can trade them. I have no problem leaving them on my bench for a couple of years either and will draft them often too.

I look at my roster in three tiers:
-Starters
-Backups
-Bench

The starters and backups tiers are position-dependent. I want at least one (in some cases, two) players who can step in at any position. Roster balance is a real consideration there.

For my bench, I don't care about positions at all. I look for two types of players on my bench: those that could ascend a tier, or those who could return something of value in a trade.

With that in mind, you need to decide if your backup tier for QB consists of one or two players. (It's not absolute, of course -- sometimes you need to imbalance your roster because the opportunity to improve elsewhere is simply too good.) At that point, whether you have 3, 5, or 11 QBs is irrelevant: the rest on your bench and are either ascending commodities or trade bait.

I always try to trade for value first, so if I can get a deal on a SF QB, even if I already have 4 of them, I'll try to do it. Everyone feels like they are set on QB until they aren't, and then I'll trade em and get value again when someone's QB goes down.
