Buy low QBs

Postby Wizard » Sat Jan 11, 2020 12:01 pm

I'm hoping to grab a QB in my SF league in the off season and want everyone's opinion on who they think might be a good buy low target. Winston comes to mind but he's one of my 2 QBs (that's why I'm looking for another QB lol). My other QB is Darnold so at least I don't have to worry about him losing his job. There's the old guys, Rivers, Brady, Roethlisberger all with a lot of question marks and probably not much left in the tank, but would't they be cheap? Maybe the better route would be to go with a struggling young QB like Haskins. What do you think, who would be a good target and what would be worth giving up to get them. I'm at 1.09 this rookie draft and in SF there could be a really good player available at that point so I'm not hot on the idea of trading my first for what I hope to be a backup/fill in QB.
QB -Tom Brady, Nick Foles Deshaun Watson

RB - Kenyan Drake, Darrius Guise, Tevin Coleman, Leonard Fournett, Kareem Hunt, Justin Jackson, Jaylen Samuels, Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson Jr., Jordan Wilkins, CJ Anderson, Chris Warren,

WR - Davante Adams , T.Y. Hilton, Courtland Sutton, Devin Funchess, Doug Baldwin, Michael Crabtree, Antonio Callaway, J’Mon Moore, Dylan Cantrell, Keith Kirkwood, James Richie

TE - Zach Ertz, Harris Demetrius, Hayden Hurst

Older guys would definitely be the cheapest but it's like buying a $200 car, you'll need another in a year. You could try to buy low on some back ups; Tyrod Taylor, maybe Jarrett Stidham, or Teddy Bridgewater (of course those guys could be obsolete after the draft). Some other guys who could be a good buy low are:

- Josh Allen
- Mayfield (maybe, but I wouldn't sell low on my share so maybe not)
- Minshew (again maybe, maybe not)
- Cam Newton

And following up on the first response, if your throwing Derrick Henry in there don't forget about the first man to do it, Dontari Poe!
Jake Fromm State Farm (12 team PPR SF)

TE: Musgrave, Mayer (TS), Trautman, Gray, Jordan
2024: 1.01, 1.07, 2.04, 2.10, 2.11, 3.01, 3.06, 3.07, 3.11

I wouldn't be so sure about Darnold. I don't think it's guaranteed he will be starting at the end of the 2020 season.

Cousins seems like a nice buy low. I feel he is perceived to be much older than he is, just a smudge older than Stafford. Has a great offense in front of him and doesn't have an injury history. He isn't as "sexy" as some of the older guys like Ryan and Stafford that have higher draft pedigree and name brands, but puts up similar numbers.

I bought this season for a 2021 1st and 2021 3rd. I'm a contending team with Jimmy G, Tannehill and Haskins so he really helped to fill out my depth.

This is such an unpopular opinion, and i think its so much more possible than people think

it's easier for everyone to pile on the crazy eyes guy than question whether their locked in take was incorrect. I don't think they'd consider benching him until 2021 though; he hasn't had a ton of stability yet and plenty of scapegoats that could be the cause (weapons, OL, coaching) of his struggles.

I agree on Newton and Minshew (to an extent), but I’m curious on a price check for the others. I reached out to the J. Allen owner recently and he believed that he shouldn’t have to add on anything more than a mid-late 2nd to get R. Wilson.

Wilson went 2.09 in my recent startup and Allen went 2.12. I don't think that that valuation is actually that far off if at all.

If I'm looking to buy low I'm looking at Jameis, Cam, and Stidham. If I'm looking for prospects to flip down the road I'm buying up Eason and Love. Maybe even Trubisky if he can be had for pennies. 0 risk/good reward if he somehow pans out.

I agree with this. Josh Allen doesnt seem like a buy low at all. I think hes in the top 6-7 dynasty QBs right now by most rankings.

If you are looking for guys who wont help much in 2020 but have a chance to jump in value...
Jameis, Cam, Trubisky...these guys have fallen pretty far from their previous highs and have a chance to return good value. Risky but the upside is there.
Tyler Huntley and Jalen Hurts...2 guys that you can have for close to nothing but have very high ceilings. Huntley went undrafted, which doesnt bode well, but his statistics in college are excellent. PFF has him rated as a top 5 graded QB in the 2020 draft class. Worth a roster spot. And Hurts is pretty talented but we wont get to see it for a while. If you can wait, go get him.

If you need production in 2020, these guys are probably undervalued right now...
Cousins...seems to be perpetually undervalued. He had a string of years where he was a top 10 fantasy QB but valued in the late-teens.
Wentz...feels like he is undervalued. Hes a great QB and hasnt had a great cast around him. 2020 is looking like his time to finally shine with all his new weapons.
Tannehill...another guy who is always undervalued, like Cousins. Not sexy by any means but productive and relatively still young for a QB.
