is QB-QB a smart startup strategy?

Postby #1BucsFan » Sat May 04, 2019 9:37 am

Drafting in my first SF startup and received the 1.06, Mahomes fell to the 1.05 and felt the owner about to snag him. I swapped 5th and 6th round picks and 2020 3rd and 4ths to move up 1 spot and take Mahomes. Did I overspend? Maybe. In the 2nd round Luck fell to my spot so I took him at the 2.07, then Keenan Allen with the 3.06. Right now we sit at the 3.08 and 5 QBs have been taken, fewer than I had expected. It seems QBs are undervalued in startups but possibly gain value once the season starts and owners realize they are hurting for QB production. What do people think of taking QBs with your first 2 picks?

You can never have enough QB's in a SF/2QB league lol. Good job! Having Luck and Mahomes should set you up very nicely for a long time.

I think you overpaid to move up 1 spot, but it’s not crazy. I’m also in the middle of a startup and started with Mahomes and Watson. I almost took 3 straight QB because they keep sliding.

Depends on settings. Is it 6 point TDs or 4 point TDs for QBs? Is it 12 or 14 team superflex? Even in a 12 team, 4 point passing TD SF league.. I think that’s a fine trade up to get Mahomes.

Yes, you are doing the right thing. And no, you did not over pay to get Mahomes. He should have been the first pick. It may take a year or two for your league mates to figure it out, but they will see the logic in the end. I would grab more young stud QBs while they are so cheap. Trust me they will be 3 times more expensive in the future. You might be at a disadvantage in year one, but you will eventually reap the rewards. In the future while others are wasting high draft picks on QB prospects you'll be scooping up RBs and WRs. Have patience and good luck.

I play in almost primarily 2QB and a lot are 10 man, and started my original 2qb league 6 years ago. There has not been a SINGLE year in which the team that won the championship had two top QBs. I will say that doesnt necessarily mean you need the top two in the rankings, but from a production standpoint. I believe every year the winner has had two top 10 qbs that year, or a top 1-3 qb plus a fringe top 10 guy.

Additionally, i just did a startup and took watson and wilson with my first two picks!

In a startup 2 QB league I had the 10 th pick. Mahomes went 1.1 , Luck 1.4, Rodgers 1.7 and Mayfield 1.8. I contemplated going QB-QB with the 10th and 11th but decided against it. I ended up getting Goff at 3.10, Dak at 5.10, Darnold at 7.10 and Flacco at 13.10. I can live with having 3 QB’s 25 or younger and getting Hopkins and M.Thomas with my first two picks.

It is going to depend on how things fall but I agree don’t be afraid to have 5 QB or so as value will only increase going forward. Watch your bye weeks for the first season too. You have made your bed so to speak so don’t be afraid to sleep in it .

I typically trade so that I can take two QBs early and not lose value. In a 12 team SF startup I’m in right now I sent my 3-5 round picks for the 1.11, 2.02, 9.11. Took Watson, MT, Mixon and Wilson, respectively.

My startup in April, I took Luck and Gurley with my first 2 picks. Got Matt Ryan in the 4th and that’s only bc the owners in this startup we’re devaluing QBs.

Unless you’ve drafted with the majority of the league, you’ll never know if QBs will fall or not. So, stick to your typical 2QBs in the first 3 picks and you can’t go wrong.

You send a 3rd, 4th, and 5th for the 11th and 13th overall plus a late pick? I'm calling the police.

The thing is, he DIDNT overpay to move up 1 spot. He moved up to get the #1 asset in SF leagues. Thats the cheapest you'd ever be able to get him IMO.

4 years ago, guy in my SF league drafted Luck + Rodgers back to back. When healthy, those two were an incredible combo, since their 20-30+ points per game would always keep him in it. He also did strike on some value players like Melvin Gordon + Jordan Howard but his WR + TE corps was incredibly weak...filled with guys like Mike Wallace/Tyler Boyd/Corey Coleman/Davante Parker/etc. On paper, those guys had worlds of potential but ultimately failed to live up to it. He actually beat me in the championship Year 1...so the move paid off but he hasn't been back ever since.

When you take multiple QBs in a row, you're setting yourself up nicely for the 2QB/SF spots but you're also going to be exposing yourself to drafting a lot of "value" players. Guys who are either too young and haven't proven anything or have underperformed...rather than having stars at the position.
