2019 rule change discussion - QB scoring

Postby TrueDawg » Wed Jun 05, 2019 8:42 am

QB scoring was changed from 1 point per 20 yards to 1 point per 25 yards last year... it was a small step but more needs to be done. QBs still score too high. Nine of the top 10 players in the whole league last year were QBs. Cousins and Trubisky don't belong in the top 20 players in the league. The highest scoring WR was #21.

I propose we further curb yardage scoring... 1 point per 30 or 35 yards. I'd also be in favor of increasing the penalty for throwing INTs from -2 to -3.

I like the scoring as is, it’s not like we are starting 2 QBs where there could be an unfair advantage. All the QBs are scored the same so I don’t see why it matters that much.

It's not about how QBs score compared to other QBs... it's about how QBs score compared to other positions. It matters cuz mediocre QBs like Eli Manning shouldn't outscore Antonio Brown. Nine of the top ten players shouldn't be QBs.

The interesting thing is that QB salaries don't really reflect their massively disproportionate scoring. Wait til Mahomes is a FA though.

But Antonio Brown and the rest of the WRs are scored the same. If we want higher scoring from WRs, RBs and TEs make the league PPR.

I dont want PPR in this league... I want QBs to not score ridiculously high just cuz they're QBs, even if they suck. Cousins shouldn't be the 16th best player in the league. Trubisky shouldn't be 18th. Eli shouldn't be 22nd. Derek Carr should not be 29th.

I’d be ok with both of those changes

To be clear... I'd just like to see more balance across the positions. I hate seeing QBs dominate the top 30 players. And I hate seeing shitty QBs outscore the best players at other positions. And I'd like to see QB scoring actually reflect the player's ability. Keenum threw 18 TDs and 15 INTs and ranked as the 32nd best player... ahead of Phillip Lindsay (who is a stud) and Julio Jones. That's ridiculous. Keenum sucks.

I get your argument but it seems to be just to improve the aesthetics of the top scoring players by including more skill position players. All it’s going to do is lower the overall scoring by QBs but won’t impact wins and loses.

I'd like to fix QB scoring, but have no optimism for it ever happening, certainly not in a shortened off-season window.

It's not about aesthetics... it's about the relative value of players/positions and the kind of production you get out of them.

If you're cool with someone getting top 32 production out of a shitty QB like Keenum, I don't know what to say. I would like to see bad QB play be PUNISHED, which might actually increase the value of the good QBs.

Big Ben and Matt Ryan were the #2 and #3 players in the league last year... and their salaries are (excluding bonuses) are $12,800 and $10,240. Aaron Rodgers (the #5 player) had a salary of $25,600.... all of which are a FRACTION of what the top RBs and WRs get paid and not really commensurate with their production. Nobody gives a $hit cuz they can get QB1 production (and top 25 players) out of garbage guys like Kirk Cousins and Eli Manning for peanuts.

If there were only 6-8 STUD quarterbacks (like there are with TEs), their salaries would be dramatically higher than other QBs (and they should) and be more in line with their production.

FWIW...

The issue isn't that QBs score too much. It's how they score too much.

I've come to think the issue is that non-PPR leagues fundamentally value TDs over yards, yet our QB scoring doesn't reflect that. Maybe devalue passing yards significantly (1/50) and increase passing TDs (6, like the rest)?

Another option might be to have more significant penalties for multiple turnovers (not just for QBs, but it would negativity affect the bum QBs most).

Yeah I wouldn't be in favor of increasing passing TDs to 6 (primarily because they produce way more TDs than even the best RBs/WRs and I think that would actually widen the scoring gap)... I think we should punish INTs more, especially multiple INTs (if the scoring system will let me set it up that way). And I'd be in favor of devaluing passing yards. I dont want to swing the pendulum too far the other way though... which is why I suggested 1 point per 35 yards. Incremental steps.

Id vote in favor of a minor change, but not interested in making any drastic changea to our scoring.
